CL sites do vary enormously which is part of the appeal.  My idea of heaven, a site in the middle of nowhere with minimal facilities would be someone else's nightmare for that very reason.  Because there is so many of them, there is something to suit everyone.

They range in price from £4 per night to £10 depending on location, facilities etc.

If I've not visited an area before I tend to look in the book for one that sounds promising.  Stay there for the night and then have a drive around the area the next day. You can look at sites without actually staying there. Write a few comments next to the listing in the book. Either 'excellent site' or 'pile of poop'.  That way you very quickly build up a porfolio of sites that are suitable for you.

If the worst happens and you don't like the site you're on there's always another one not far down the road.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

I agree with a previous post about some fields being overrun with tents etc. We went to visit some friends staying with others on a 'site'  near to us and noticed lots of tents (and the dreaded sheep calling cards!) but I also noticed 5 caravans in a nice tidy area nearer the farmhouse. I realised this was the CL/CS part and the other fields had been taken over by tents - with only 1 loo in a portaloo-type building!  People were all nice and friendly, but I couldn't help thinking that if I was on the CS/CL I'd have been pretty miffed ....

Thanks for all your replies, I will take the plunge next year as it may be a little late this year to take full advantage of everything on offer

Cheers

Andy
