There is the difference between £8 per night and £20+ for a start, and lots more choice.

£20 a night just for a tap..... I'm sorry but i wouldn't have paid that!!!

That's over simplifying it if I may say. A full service pitch usually costs about £3-£4 per night more. For that you not only get "a tap", you get you own drainage point, hardstanding and depending on the site, lots of other bits and pieces.

I don't know how old you are or how much you earn, but for me personally, caravanning is bloody hard work and the little extra that I pay to have a full service pitch makes the holiday all that more comfortable and enjoyable.

I cannot see what pleasure or need there is to have to traipse backwards and forwards with Wastemasters and Aquarolls, when for a few quid a night you can be rid of these tiresome chores. You don't do it at home so why expect to do it on holiday. Seems daft to me.

Vic

How am I over simplifying?

Littleesle wrote......We have just paid £20 per night for a site with no facilities whatsoever apart from a water tap and we were expected to pay for firewood. The kids were charged the same (£5) even though they are only 8 and 5. We had a lovely time but really I think this pricing is cheeky.

But this seems to be the going rate even for very basic sites. I remember camping being a cheap holiday!

It isn't as  cheap as it used to be, but with 4 kids, one over 12 who is now treated as an adult with many places it's a lot cheaper than other options. We could not afford to go away otherwise, and we certainly wouldn't get as many short breaks or weekends away - even if we are close to home there's no mundane chores or housework to be doing!

That is hardly a serviced pitch is it? It probably means one tap for everyone as well, not one at each pitch. We actually had a tap at each pitch on the CL we recently stayed at for £8 per night. Granted there was nothing else but ehu and waste disposal but we thought it was great. OH doesn't mind in the least having to fetch/dispose of water etc., it doesn't take long. I have offered to help but he says he's ok with it.
