Most people are going to disagree with you Paul, me included.
Trust me, I know how to relax on holiday, but I will not tolerate other people invading my space......Sorry.
Camping etiquette is about respect in an unwritten form. The one which is at the top of this list, which is often said when newbies ask and that is. Not to walk through someone's pitch and definitely not between car and tent. It is considered rude and an invasion of privacy. Unless invited to do so. People mark out their area with windbreakes tables and chairs. It's amazing people still rude and ignorant who still walk through the middle.
I had two tents pitched together, I had people walking between them, had tables and chairs to mark the area. Even when I put a wind break up between the tents to protect our privacy, people still walked through by passing the wind break. So disrespectful.

Went for a trek in the Peak District yesterday. Public footpath was worn right through a field. Pretty much a straight line from entry gate to exit stile on the other side.
Said field just happened to have a couple of dozen caravans in it, all pitched willy nilly. No rank and file pitches.
At least 6 were extremely close to the worn grass, which clearly denoted the public right of way.
I just couldn't do it!
We detoured away from the pathway purely to stay away from the pitched units. Only a matter of a few yards here and there, through the shin height grass, but it just felt the right thing to do.
The nearest we got to a unit was about 15ft, and that was the non-door side of a caravan that was clearly unattended.
...And besides... Mike3003 could have been sat in front of one of them, enjoying his lunch!
We camped last August bank holiday weekend. Found a nice pitch only to have a tent pitch up next to us too close. Their guide ropes were crossing ours. The site had a curfew but it didn't stop them drinking and talking to the early hours of the next morning. Someone must have phoned the warden because we heard them being told to quieten it down. The now drunk woman could not understand why. We got revenge the next morning by playing music louder than what we normally would (everyone nearby were up ) we made sure they didn't get a lie in. I know two wrongs don't make a right . Has anyone else had a similar experience and did you take revenge?

French campers carry little white plastic picket fencing to put round their pitch. I feel a portable electric fence could easily be run from a leisure battery, maybe even a solar charger....

The watchtowers would take-up a bit of room in the roof box though.
I don't know if its still the same,but campsites in Italy especially at the coast were packed, same at one of the sites at Munich, if you went out you might find a tent where your car was parked!
Not very safe, but we were younger then!

We've only been 'invaded' twice, and both times (not out of choice) it was because we were pitched on the direct route to the toilet, which is one of the reasons we usually pitch as far away as possible from said ablutions block

Yes, you have to include this in choosing your pitch. Shade or sun, flat ground or stones, wind direction, hedges for shelter. I send OH mad making him drive round and round choosing........
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
