does anyone know of or recommend a good campsite for families whereby we would be able to commute into central london reasonably.i.e near to railway station/tube/bus links.

The CCC site at Walton on Thames is 1 mile from a train station. Have never stayed there myself though. [EDIT - just read more closely, there's no toilet at this site. Horsley (1 mile from a station) or Chertsey (2 miles) may suit better ? ]

This one is Loughton is good because although it's quite a long way out, Loughton Station is on the central line so the trains are very frequent and travelling to all parts of London is easy. Loads of people commute from here.
Floppy - to get to Hampstead (Belsize Park station) you'd need to change onto the Northern line at Bank. It would probably take just over an hour.

Abbey Wood - Caravan Club site only 4 minutes to a railway station. Excellent train service to Greenwich and London. When we went we got the train to Greenwich and a boat down the Thames into London returned late that night to Abbey Wood by train - no problems. ------------- Galley Wench

There's also the Caravan Club site at Crystal Palace , have never stayed there myself.
Floppy, you can get a train from Gypsy Hill or Crystal Palace to London Bridge, and get on the Northern Line there.
Not sure of any sites on the north west side of London that might be easier for getting to the Royal Free.

There is a CS just outside St. Albans at a place called Sandridge, phone no. 07973 713366. You can go by train from St. Albans to West Hampstead for the Royal Free.
