Not trying to be argumentative but.... what if you don't have kids but are forced into still paying for 4 people, 2 adultls + 2 kids when there are only 2 people in the unit.
I understand what you're saying and I sort of agree as we have to pay the extras as well ( 1 kid, awning dog etc. ) but I think it'd be unfair for a single person or couple to have to pay for 4 people when they don't need to. Lets face it camping/caravanning is becoming more popular and the sites aren't there as a charity, they are buisnesses. The pricing system they use starts with the premiss that the 'basic' set up is 2 people 1 car no dog and goes up from there. If we accept that then at least we can get a more clear idea of how expensive camp sites can be.
I always pick sites that have a low start price but I accept that the price will be more once the 'extras' are added.
All that said I do agree that £20 would be my absolute maximum per night. No site is worth more than that.
Just my point of view but I think its a fair system.

Is it just me that thinks most of these extras aren't that unjustified ?
We have 2 adults + 2 kids, therefore we use twice the amount of water for example, that 2 adults will use. Basically, 4 people use more of the facilities than 2 do. So I don't see the problem with charging a little bit extra. Same for EHU - why should I pay the same when I don't use EHU as the pitch next to me that does ? It seems a bit obvious to me.
There used to be a more fixed charge approach to camping in the UK, then when we went to France we found a completely different system, where you paid for individuals, car(s), small pitches, large pitches, etc. It seemed much fairer tbh, and now we're adopting that here.
However just because it's a fair SYSTEM doesn't mean it's an excuse for overcharging when it's all totalled up ! Some sites just use it as an excuse to rake in a few extra £s. If a site charges £20 all-in one year, then the next year charges £20 for a pitch + 2 adults and adds a host of extras - well that's just blatant profteering.
What i dont understand is the extra charge for an awning its not as if the site could park another van that close to another unit. Soon they will be charging extra for using windbreaks. I think sites should charge for family 2adults +2 kids up to 15yrs then maybe an extra for additional persons. ehu I understand we know they are running a business and have to make a profit but some seem to think they are running a GOLD MINE, after all its not as if camping will ever go out of fashion. anymore than £20 night forget it. Yes i check the charges before i look at the site. some people camp because they enjoy it some people because they are on a budget I camp because as a family we enjoy it and also we are on a budget.
Most sites we use charge us for the pitch and includes 2 adults and extra for electric and maybe an awning. If the charge is very reasonable I don't mind paying 20p for showers either. If I had children I would expect to pay for them but perhaps not full adult price and not for babies but it depends on the facilities, if it was an all singing and dancing one geared for kids then it would be a different matter maybe.
As we are retired and on lower income we look for sites that give reductions for off season periods and weekday charges and three nights for price of two offers.
I look at loads of sites via the 'search' on here and quite a few have the same charge throughout the year, well I certainly would not use them because I would not pay same in October Mon - Fri as I would expect to pay in August.
These sites are businesses and need to make a profit after all and they run them and market them as such and some get it right and some wrong for themselves and their customers, so I suppose we have to decide what suits us as individuals and vote with our feet.
May be worth giving the sites some feedback, if this is difficult face to face, most sites have a website and email.
The only thing though that I cannot abide is real greed and you know if this is the case and of course you do not use or return to them.

We are CC members and mainly use their sites as the standards are high. They charge for the pitch (including EHU) and per person. Children under 5 are free, those 16 and over are adults. There are no other charges unless you are on a serviced pitch (own water and waste).
I think this is fair. It is the people that use the facilities, more people = more water, electricity, toilet paper etc used. There are only 2 of us usually, unless DD comes along, so I don't see why we should pay the same as a family.
We try not to go in "high season" as it can be expensive, we like to keep under £20 too!
I don't mind paying per person because, as has been said, people use facilities such as hot water.
What did annoy me was when I booked a pitch and had to pay extra for an additional tent - we were using a small 3 man dome and an even smaller 2 man dome - whereas huge 6 or 8 man tents paid less!
