We are heading down to Southland on the Isle of Wight in September (travelling on a Sunday) and are looking for the best route through Southampton to Red Funnel Terminal 1 on West Quay Road?

Leaving the M3 at J14 is it better to follow the A33 trhough Soton or go round the M27 to J3 and drop down via the M271 / A35 / A33 West Quay Road? If anyone knows the routes, is the right turn into Terminal 1 from West Quay Road controlled by lights / roundabout or is it a dodge through breaks in traffic?

Any advice will be much appreciated,

Chris

Go round the M27 to J3 and drop down via the M271 / A35 / A33 West Quay Road?

Definately the above option or you will end up going through some built up areas.

BTW, the ferry terminal isn't in Southampton Docks, though not that much further on.

yes i agree, m27 route definatly. the turn into the terminal isn't controled by lights but as its just 50 feet off a roundabout, the traffic coming the other way isn't fast moving. there is a central reservation gap so you are not blocking the traffic behind you as you wait ofr a gap to turn in.
