I would like to know if anybody has been to Valley Farm, Clacton. It is a Park Resorts caravan site. I would also like to know about what to do in Clacton, where to go and where to avoid i.e good pubs and restaurants. Any good places to go - Walton on the Naze, Frinton, Brightlingsea.

I went to Valley Farm last September in a static with a group of friends. The site was nice enough and so was the caravan. Great for kids. The only down side for us was the lack of entertainment as it was obviously deemed as out of season. Its a good walk or a short drive into Clacton itself.
Clacton has shops and the seafront with crazy golf etc. There is a burger stall on the front which I would definitely NOT recommend as the owner was rude and extremely abnoxious, but I cant remember the name of it, sorry. Colchester is not far away and is a nice town to visit.
Clacton is ok usual seaside things cheap shops a few high st names beach is good in some parts but Frinton has the better beach .Colchester is half hour drive away best fish and chips in Clacton a place called the Dive !
thanks for your info, would have liked to know if you had been to walton on the naze, frinton etc and what it is like there. Would also like to know about the nightlife too - any good pubs and restaurants (sit down).

As the old joke goes Harwich for the Continent Frinton for the Incontinent
If you want nightlife and organised entertainment then Frinton is not for you, if you want a nice beach, clean and civilized place to visit then maybe it is. Walton also has a nice beach and walks along the Naze are nice. Harwich old town is quite nice, as is Mistley/Mannigtree.
Frinton does have the better beach, but to be quite honest not much else, that is the way the locals want to keep it. YOu would'nt believe the hassle that was created when a bar wanted to open up in the main high street area called Connaught Avenue, it was unreal. Clacton defo more seaside like with the amusements and fish and chip shops, oh and of course the pier. As a child we used to go to Walton on the Naze, depending on the age of the children, you can go looking for shark teeth on the beach as they get washed up alot, have to go more to the Naze end. I'm lucky that my mum lives near to Frinton, so my kids and us are always at the beach (whatever the weather, it's great for them!)
Enjoy your break won't you?

Unfortunately Essex really does suffer from the lack of a decent touring site, in general terms. That is a real pain as I live less than an hour from Clacton and if there was one I would use it for weekends.
Valley Farm doesn't really cater for the tourer its more for the static owners and doesn't rate that highly in my book personally. If you want to try a smaller site there is Homestead at Weeley which appears quite nice or Grange Farm at Thorpe Le Soken which is a working farm very basic but ideal for a base to get around. It is basic though!!
Good eats, two pubs in Thorpe Le Soken The Crown and The Bell both are very good. Clacton has very little to offer though The Dive does normally serve a reasonable portion of Chish and Fips. The Robin Hood near Little Clacton isn't bad and Frinton has a couple of decent eateries though I cannot remember the names of them.
Where to go - Frinton for the beach but nothing else though it is a short walk into Walton for the Pier and amusements. Clacton for a seafront walk though little else as it suffers greatly from London overspill especially in the summer. Manningtree has a nice riverside walk and Jimmys Farm is close by. Harwich and Dovercourt is OK if you are a boatspotter. Colchester for shopping. West Mersea is Ok for a day beach isn't anything to write home about though it is great for windsurfing.
Unfortunately Essex in general offers little I'm afraid hence we always go west !! Just wish we lived there.
We have been to St Oswyth just outside clacton on Hutleys you are only yards from the beach there are a few sites around mostly statics but Hutleys has all amenities around it they only take 16 tourers so booking essential but its worth a visit we will be back in future for sure, Colchester Zoo only a ride away and well worth the entrance fee

I know what you mean Shelley. Last August we drove home from Toroella de Montgri in Northern Spain back to Chelmsford. We got stuck in 2 jams, the first at the Dartford Tunnel (2 hours) and the second at Junction 28 trying to leave the M25 for the A12 (1 and a half hours)...... roadworks of course !
It is a sad state of affairs but Essex is full up to bursting.

Dont get me started on this one, admittedly we had driven no way as far as you, but it was quite comical. Last August we had driven back from North Wales, absolutely fine, the first traffic jam we came to was on the M11, literally after we had passed the Essex sign, made me chuckle. The M25 is also a complete nightmare, took me on one ocassion over three and a half hours to get from Witham to Kingston in Surrey, ending up giving up and bagging tea and toast at an old mates house!!!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
