Am new to this but have read the posts over the last couple of weeks with much interest. Would really like to get your opinions.
This will be our 2nd camping trip. The first was over 7years ago and without children, so we are novices. We have a 3yr old and 1yr old and are hoping it will be fine and that they will love it (But will I). But aside from that, where the heck do we go. Really like the look of Seaview International at Gorran Haven nr Mevagissy, however they only allow 1 windbreak. This may be a prob as I was hoping to use a few windbeaks to create a barrier to stop the kids running off!! Can those of you with young children advise on whether this is essential or not!!! Also I have very fond memories of St Ives, Hayle etc and so I am torn between the two areas. Is one better then the other. This is driving us crazy, we have spent every night for the past week deciding where to go, and I think we have just about read every review going. At least we got the tent sorted (Gelert lokon vario 6), so feel at peace about something!!!!!
Thanks for your help!!

Hi & welcome, I'm not sure I'm gonna be much help with choosing an area as we go to & love both .
Tregarton Park was the last site we stayed at in Cornwall
(near Mevagissey) & I think it would be excellent for children the age of yours (ours are slightly older),it has a very good totally enclosed play area & a lovely pool ,there is no pub/club house etc. so no noise, but is close to Mevagissey for evenings out. You can pick your pitch on the website which we thought really useful with kids . Only downside is I reckon its probably fully booked for this summer , but check website for cancellations.
Haven't stayed in St .Ives but Polmanter gets good reviews, we stay in Hayle as I used to live near & sis still lives there. St Ives Bay Holiday Park is brill with indoor pool and beach on doorstep. Paradise park (bird park, huge indoor play area) gets our kids vote every year!
As for the windbreak I understand your point, some people don't like them but we did find them handy when the kids were really little to mark their boundries. You can buy really long ones that may solve the problem of only being allowed one.
Well this probably didn't help at all but wherever you end up have a great time, we are off to Isle of Wight next sunday for 2 weeks in our tent can't wait!!
All the best Lou
We've stayed at both Tregarton and Polmanter in the past. Of the two Tregarton is the better in as much as it is in a comparatively sheltered position and with trees etc, whereas Polmanter is on Halsetown Moor and is quite exposed. Both have swimming pools and good facilities. If it comes down to beaches IMHO St Ives area is the nicer of the two areas with more choice. I don't envy you having to make the choice, my wife and I came to an agreement of alternating between the two! If the weather appears a bit iffy then Tregarton every time for me.
Will look at Tregarton, Polmanter & St Ives AGAIN - yes I have already looked at them, but I think I have looked at so many they all start to blend into one big campsite with every facility going!!!! Better decide soon, we hope to go first 2 weeks of September.

Hi, St Ives for me every itme. Polmanter is a superb site - the big bonus is the local minibus service which stops at the site gate. 5 mins and you're in the town, and no worries about having a few beers with lunch. Site will advise if the bus is still operating when you intend to visit. Enjoy your break .Del.
Hi All, thanks for your replies. We have now booked somewhere - in ilfracombe, north Devon - I know - How the hell did that happen.
Well to be honest I think we spent so long looking at sites in Cornwall and getting nowhere close to making a decision, we then ended up looking at Devon & Dorset.
Prob is, this is our first camping trip, and with 3yr old and 17month old, were trying to look for sites to meet ALL their needs (a bit too much really). Anyhow we are going to Stowford Farm on a special £39.90 for one week in Sept (the price was a big selling point too). They have a mini zoo and indoor pool and woodland walks so think it will be ideal for our little ones. I still keep thinking about Cornwall though, so will def make that the location for the next trip. (providing we don't get put off) I'll leave a review on our return.
Thanks again

Definitely St Ives, There is a site in Gwithian (About 3 miles from Hayle) I think its called Gwithian farm (Right opposite the red river inn pub!) I have been going to the area since I was born and we still go every year and never get bored! Highly recommend it, Mevagissey is nice but IMO St ives area wins for me!
------------- Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
Hi basic. We are off to Stowford 8th September and cant wait! We have been there so many times now it like a home from home. The kids will love the petorama, parks, pool etc. Also Stowford doesn,t mind how many windbreaks you use, so long as they are all on your pitch and not encroaching anyone else, you can surround your pitch to help keep an eye on the kids.
Every time we go, we always make a trip to Bude in Cornwall, so we get to do both counties! takes about 1 hour 20 mins.
Hope you have a wonderful time.
------------- I,d live life in the fast lane but, i,m married to a speed bump.
We would highly recommend a visit to BUDE - we live here and love it and you will too! Well worth a visit from Ilracombe (easy to get to on the A39). We stay up in Ilfracombe from time to time coz it's so quick and easy to get to!

------------- More adventures in 2026 -
Feb - Steamer Quay CAMC, Totnes
May - Cheddar & Dulverton
June - Lake District
July - Devizes, New Forest & Dorset
September - TBA
Christmas - Ayr, St Ives
New Year - Hillhead CAMC, Brixham
Sounds like we're gonna have to visit Bude then. 1hr 20mins sounds ok for a day out! I like the idea of no restrictions on windbreaks, although not first choice to pen us in, its good the know we have the option if we need it.
