hi everyone,

we are a couple in our 20's, heading up to cumbria (only live in lancashire!) on friday 31st august for 3 nights camping, we will arrive by train. We went camping last year and stayed at low wray, ambleside, it was vey nice but a bit too remote for us, we like to be close to the action, not big ramblers, like the odd walk now and then though.

This time we want to stay at a site thats quite lively, we don't mean we want loud groups making noise at midnight!!!  But somewhere within walking distance of a good size village/town, with great local sights etc...

I hope it doesn't sound like i am asking too much!!!

all advice welcome!!!

If you havent looked at the sites listed here and checked reviews you could use google earth and zoom into the area you would like to try and look for campsites (they show up easily in most instances). Once you have found one find a postcode and then search for campsites and call them and ask. Sounds long winded but it shows just what the area is like and where the nearest villages are etc.

In our early years of camping we went to cumbria and found it was great but was too long ago to remember just where we stayed.

Be carefull though otherwise you might find next years trip will involve having to use a car and a bigger tent for any extra addition! grin

There is a site in Hawkshead, see review on this website http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=2238

Not stayed there, but have passed it a few times whilst in Hawkshead. Hawkshead itself is lovely with plenty of good pubs and you can walk as far as you want in virtually any direction from there.
Don't know whether it would be what you are looking for though, there are bigger towns in the Lakes, ie Kendal, Keswick, there are Camping and Caravanning Club sites near both those.

The Keswick Caravan and Camping site sounds like it would suit you down to the ground.

We have just returned from there and will be returning in the future. The site is only a 5 minute walk from the town where there are plenty of pubs/cafe's to visit, plenty shops and good supermarkets.

You can go around the lake on the steamer for £6.90 and hop on and off wherever you like and there are plenty of lovely walks around the lake as well as a very accesible walk up the Catsbells Peak from which you get a brilliant view of the area.

If you are camping in your tent and dont require EHU, ask for a pitch overlooking the lake. --  a fantastic view.
