we tried Vale of Pickering in North Yorkshire 2 years ago and have already booked up for this year.
It is not a massive site but is friendly - the staff are great and we (me, the ball and chain and the 2 sprats) love this site. We live in Newcastle so it is far enough away for a holiday but close enough to home
Depends what you want really in terms of entertainment and price. Haggerston castle in Northumberland has everything to keep kids entertained but is ridiculously expensive at bank holidays in the same style there are several Haven sites on the North Yorks coast (Reighton, blue dolphin, primrose valley) For a quieter site but with pool and bar/restaurant Waren near Bamburgh is nice but apart from the pool there doesn't seem to be much for children to do although there were plenty around last time we went and all seemed to be enjoying themselves. We were going to try Crimdon Dene near Hartlepool that weekend but couldn't get in. Thats a park resorts site which seem to be good value as they have the same facilities as Haven but a lot cheaper. They have several parks in the north.
You may be limiting yourself by choosing sites that have a pool. would you consider sites without a pool but within a 10 minute drive of a leisure centre? - If so, try the Sandhaven site at South Shields.
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
