My local Tesco has already started putting out xmas stock on the shelves (in september?)

Anyway, we got fed up to the back teeth of all the commercialisation and would love to escape in our caravan over the xmas period. Ideally I'm looking for a CC site not too fussed distance wise. Also have three young children and a dog. Please help us escape

(incidentally how can you explain to little ones where santa gets into a caravan if there is no chimney/)

Hi Scrufts

Can't help with the campsite (I tend to be a bit busy around Christmas), but how about making a santas key for the kids. Some ideas here.

Apparently Harrods and one of the other big London stores have got their decorations out - they say it's because a lot of people buy their decorations when they're in this country on their summer holidays!  I don't know who's the maddest.

We have been away at Christmas - there's only the two of us so it doesn't really matter where we are.  We went away on Boxing Day last year and haven't decided about this year yet.

Depending on what you're looking for, you should find quite a lot of sites open over Christmas - a lot of CLs and CSs are open all year if you don't mind quiet and just want a change of scene.  Don't forget it'll be high season prices though!

When we were in Padstow (a fortnight ago) the Christmas shop was indicating how many days are left - perhaps it is there all year.  To be honest spreading the cost of Christmas can't be a bad thing can it?  Maybe people won't load up there credit cards if they buy throughout the year?  The older you get the quicker the time goes and Christmas doesn't seem that many paydays away now!  I already know what my kids want - and it's good as it gives me a budget idea.  Having said that I haven't bought anything yet but in work we buy premium bonds every month and then we get it all back plus a proportion of the winnings in November!

We are going away to a CL near Chester, price with ehu is 8 a night. I think there are quite a lot of things going on there around Christmas but not sure how suitable it would be for young children, no play area on the site I suppose but there is a cycle way nearby.

Hi Anne - there is quite a bit to do around Chester - its just travelling out to do things.

There is the Cheshire Oaks retail park for christmas sales lol - worthy of a visit - go into Au Naturale and give my ex a kick if you like lol

The Blue Planet Aquarium near to Cheshire Oaks

The Boat Museum at Ellesmere Port

Walk the walled city of Chester

Chester Cathedral

Northgate Arena in Chester has a big fun swimming pool

Ice Skating at Deeside

Contact the Tourist board for Chester and get them to send you lots of things that you can do and then you can formulate a plan before you go rather than spending time being wasted as you dont know what to do next.

Hope you have a great time

Kitten X

Don't forget Chester Zoo. Opening times over Christmas may be difficult though.

Thanks both, we don't go to zoos though but most of the others sound good (not ice skating though!). Will get OH to take his steel toe capped boots Kitten. We also want to go to Liverpool and see the Beatles things.

Do know the area btw, was at college in Wrexham a long time ago and have been back since. There is more to do now though.

How I envy those who are able to escape the madness of christmas and it's horrid commercial trappings! Not sure our 16 yr old heaterless sprite would fit the bill though!
However - our 2 sons - despite being 15 and 18 love the traditions that we have made our own at christmas (think the prssies help too)...and my mum and Gran might be a bit put out too! Still - can't complain - 2 teen sons who still want to be with mum and dad at christmas and a 96 year old Gran to have around for lunch.....think I'll count my lucky stars!

I spent a lot of today re-merchandising stock so we could get out our toiletry and electrical gift sets that we stock for Christmas. I know it is only the beginning of September, but believe me the demand is there, we already have customers starting their Christmas shopping and they want choice now.

I would love to go away for Christmas - but I don't think the rest of the family would forgive me if I took Pip and Alice away.

Don't forget that Father Christmas is magic, and he can get in anywhere to leave presents for children.    He also knows where they are as well - so it doesn't matter if they are not at home - just so long as they are being good.

I will admit to buying my first present yesterday.    I will buy presents early to spread the cost - but decorations etc wait until December - unless I saw anything really special.
The only other thing I have started doing is the prep work for the kids to make their own cards.   It is going to be much easier on me if I have everything they need ready so they just have to colour, stick, glitter and glue then write them.     As there is aprox 100 cards to do, this does take some time.

I'd love to go away for Christmas to Austria but we care for my parents who are unable to travel and there is no way I'd leave them here on their own over the festive period so we are unable to do what we want to.  I loathe Christmas, have done for many years, so can't wait for the time to come when we can go do what we want to do.
