I have booked to stay at Sandy Balls over 08/09 new year (i know it's a long way off), has anyone done the same and if so what is it like, do they have any special events on , any info would be nice

Totally agree with you Snowy the Fighting Cocks is a great pub.
Haven't heard of anything special going on at Sandy Balls Gary - can go and ask for you if you like because it's only just up the road from us. They've opened a synthetic ice rink for winter (been in the local press recently), guess that if that takes off this winter it will be there next.

We are going there for New Year. They have got all the usual childrens activities and New Years night they have entertainment that looks very good.
Family disco from 7pm,a group I think 8:30 -10pm, Blues brothers 10:30-11:45pm, disco & bar until 1am. All looks good so we are looking forward to it. Will let you know when we come back.
