I do not expect much response to this post but I would like it noting that South Yorkshire has a lot to offer the caravaner (except somewhere to stay!!Please let' start a revalution and get South Yorkshire recognised as a place worth visiting..

We are off to Hebden Bridge in May and really looking forward to it, we like walking and the countryside not a lot of razamataz. We've been to a lot of places in Yorkshire mainly north and west and we love it, if the weather is half decent theres nowhere better.
We stayed at Barnsley last year Green Springs Caravan Park, nice, basic but all that was needed, you're right the area needs more site choice, come on business people, buy some land and sort us a good site out.
Are any of these sites suitably for cycling? I'm thinking reasonably flat? I love Yorkshire but haven't visited anywhere in the South of the county - I'm willing to be converted!

Yes there is plenty to see and do in South Yorkshire but for some reason it is lacking in caravan and camping sites, why i do not know as there is lots of countryside to see.
Maybe it has to do with it once being an industrial area and it is taking time to find its feet as a tourist area.
I live in Barnsley and a 20 min drive in either direction i am in open countryside with a variety of landscapes.
Lets hope it develops in years to come.
cheers

Sorry, in my earlier posting I neglected to mention an overnight stay on a CL or maybe a CS just outside Doncaster. It was excellent with really helpful owners and obviously a loyal band of regulars. If I can remember the name I'll post it.
...and it was fairly flat so quite good for cycling...!

I agree, we do need more sites in South Yorkshire. I too live in Barnsley and Barnsley does have lots to offer. Barnsley has changed a lot over the last few years - the mines and muckstacks have all gone, there is fantastic countryside close by, Meadowhall for the shopaholics, trans penine trails, for cycling, Working farms, the famous Barnsley market (which is in the process of redevelopment) Historical houses, museums, leisure centres, etc etc etc. Perhaps Steve is right, that our industrial past has held Barnsley back - we need to encourage people to visit this part of the country - people shouldn't be put off, we don't all wear flat caps, keep whippets and fly pigeons !
I have got to admit it is a place I woud like to visit but where do we put the van?,I do keep looking just in case a site has popped up over night. LOL.

Could be to do with the amount of rain you get .
We stayed at a caravan site in Barnsley a few years ago does either of you know what its called. All i remember was it was fairly close to the M1 motorway, was down at the bottom of a hill and was very close to a wooded area.
