Hi, I'm looking for a nice family campsite near Birkdale, Southport. I'm taking my son to the Open golf, so we've decide to take our fc up and make a few days of it. We're looking for 3 night in mid July - Golf Open week. If anyone could recommend a nice family site around the Southport area I would really appreciate it.Electric hook up if possible
Thanks, Dai

Yes, Formby Point is well located but toilet & shower block need to upgraded (visited in summer this year) so be warned. Haven't tried Riverside but there are a number of CL/CSs a bit further away which are well worth a visit. Try Burscough & Halsall.
You'll need to book early I think as there may be a lot of people with the same idea for the Golf Open!

Your nearest site to the golf is the Southport Caravan Club site but will probably be fully booked now. You can check availability on line via their web site.
Next closest is willow bank at Ainsdale. approx 3 miles way.
Then, There's Riverside and a couple more out that way whose names escape me.
You can also check the new CL at Southport Marine Lake.

Was going to say read the reviews on Riverside. Been twice in a tent, and the first time was not a problem - second time the tenters were being treated as the dregs of the earth. I I checked in to receptions, as pitch had been prebooked by as part of a rally and the organiseres were already there who had card pass - well before I could get through somebody else had driven through and the barrier had gone down. Well what a trouble make I was when I asked for them to be raised so that I could get through. Tents were on a part of the site which was waterlogged with overgrown grass. We were not allowed to go to a drier part of the field - it was simply TENTS GO THERE!. It was not just those at he rally that had this problem - other tenters were treated in the same way.
Although it is slightly out of the way Abbey Farm in Ormskirk is very nice and gets good reviews. Not sure if WillowBank take folding campers but they are only down the road from Birkdale, and are a very nice site.
Sue, there is a Caravan Club site in Southport itself - right on the front. I don't think that it is a CL site, but a "full" site. It had been there for many many years - it is really near the marine lake. Can't think where they could put another site in in that area.
I read it in the club magazine. Then, went to check its whereabouts following the directions that were listed. It is situated on the coast road nearest to the roundabout at the pier. sort of the rear of Dunhelm Mills on the edge of Marine Lake.
From the club site, travel along the coast road, under the pier and carry on over the roandabout. Then it's immediately on the right either before or just after the little bridge which is about 30yds from the said roundabout.
When I last looked. there was a hand painted 'Caravans' sign near the entrance !
OOh that sounds interesting will have a look, we are booked in at the Caravan Club Site at Souhport in the spring. Thanks though I expect that this new CL would be totally booked up if the CC site is anything to go by!
