Well, if you are are a member of the camping and caravan club then there is a cerificated (or is that certified?) site at Broadbottom, about 10 miles east of the city centre and near the M67. £8 a night but VERY basic (1 loo, a sink and a shower and I mean 1!), and noisy with delivery lorries etc. Just stayed there, would not do again. If you are camping under canvas you are also expected to put your tent on a hard standing, we didn't and were told off! It would be ok for a night or 2 if you don't mind roughing it a bit! There is also a site near Heywood which is better but don't think they take tents.
