caravan club often have sites near town centres -
eg York Bowness Coniston Castleton Hawes Leyburn
plus Boroughbridge - C&CC
and if Sandhaven Site is still going at South Shields is still in business - that's excellent spot

Probably not north enough but Riverside caravan park at Stratford-upon-Avon is walking distance into town, plus there is a river taxi service in peak season. They only accept caravans and motorhomes though, no tents.
In the Peak District, Greenhills is just about walking distance into Bakewell (although we tended to cycle rather than walk), and is walking distance into Ashford in the Water, which is a small village but has a couple of pubs.
The C&CC site at Keswick is close to the town and a very nice site, obviously cheaper if you are a member. The racecourse site at Stratford on Avon is close to the town too and chepaer than Riverside I think if price is a consideration.
A little further north still is Moffat C&CC site. Next to the Woollen centre with good cafe etc it is only a couple of minutes walk into Moffat town centre which is a lovely little town.

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
How about Tewkesbury CC site, just a 5 min walk from the town centre and the river severn and all the riverside pubs! Great little site too!
