Everyone all over the country knows that pitches were in great demand this bank holiday. So yesterday, we had booked several pitches - 1 being a tent with hookup. Mid afternoon we had a Trailer Tent turn up to book in, but they were at the wrong site, they then asked if we could fit them in! Sorry we said we are fully booked. But guess what - the original tent/hookup booking never turned up - didnt phone to say not coming - nothing.
The majority of campers/caravanners are considerate people and would phone say changed their mind, somethings happened, cannt get there etc etc - but every now and again you get one and for some reason it always seems to be on a Bank Holiday! ahahah. You might say - you have the deposit (£25), but thats not the point its only manners to let the site know surely, or am i being too hard?
That over, hope everyone is enjoying their Bank holiday, not too much rain, and managed to find a pitch.

We had some no-shows over the weekend too and I entirely sympathise. It is all well and good retaining the deposit - but that is still just one night and the other 2-3 nights can't always be filled. Courtesy is a lovely thing that really helps the harmony in this business :)
But.... the sun did shine, the rain only visited briefly and our site is nearly full, with genuinely happy campers - so no complaints and lots of smiles and relief!
All the best,
Tina

I agree with these sentiments entirely and most of the time they are fitting.
However while not condoning this behaviour in any way whatsoever, the reason for the "no show" is not known and it could be because some catastrophe has overtaken the family. Maybe an accident en route to the site, sudden serious illness ie stroke or heart attack or even bereavement. In these circumstances holidays come a long way down the list of priorities for the family and I don't think placing them on a black list would be particularly appropriate.
I agree that it is only courtesy to let the site know if you're not going to show up if this is at all possible. As Vic says, it may be some major catastrophe but if they cannot phone at the time I would expect a courtesy phone call, as soon as they are able, to apologise. I'm sure there are a small number of people who book up sites and choose not to go due to working shifts, bad weather etc, but don't inform the site owner.
It surprises me that site owners do not hang signs outside their site saying whether they have pitches available, like B & B's do.

Sometimes a little rain must fall before you reach a rainbow.
The work will wait while you show the child the rainbow, but the rainbow won't wait while you finish the work.

they do in cornwall. we passed quiet a few sites on way to landsend and st ives that had signs on entrance to sites saying vacancies or fully book. its a good idea. or even have a web site just for camp sites in britain where they can state vacancies. would save a few pounds on phone calls and hours searching. even a section on here for all site owners. now that is an idea!!!!

Sorry Ang and Ken, it seems that it's a sign of the times that people do not take the trouble to call and cancel.
We have always checked with the sites before going and on the occassions we have had to cancel we have rang up well in advance. It's only polite to do so.

Steve & Sheila
PS Don't know what went wrong with the first post!!!!
We had someone book online for 25th - 26th August and had 2 receipts to confirm this. They turned up on Saturday and demanded to know why there wasn't a pitch saved for them. Once again all our fault!!!!
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
