Been doing the South Hams with the kids for a few years and think it's time to spread our horizons for next summer. Priorities are sandy beaches that are not too windy (kids not yet at body boarding stage and feel the cold more than I do), not too commercialized but need parking and toilets within about a ten minute walk. Rainy day activities would be a bonus (castles etc rather than towns). Thinking of the Gower or Pembrokeshire but not sure which to go for (and if Pembrokeshire where, eg. north near Poppit Sands or west or east?). Would be grateful for feedback on all these areas and opinions about relative merits of each. Many thanks

I have a friend who lives near the Gower and its beautiful, but we have never camped there.
We camped at a woodland site called Trellyn, in Pembrokshire this summer, fab site and there are several others in the area that looked good. Beach at bottom of site, and huge sandy surfing beach about 5 minutes away called White Sands.( Carpark, toilets and basic shop)
We don`t do commercialised either, and were very happy here, kids, aged 6 and 9 were well happy playing in the woods on site. Weather was awful, and we found plenty to do.
My six year old has been bodyboarding in her wetsuit for 3 summers now, she occ. goes blue, but its character building!!
Three Cliffs Bay on the Gower is my favourite beach in the whole of Britain and there's a nice campsite overlooking it. It's on a clifftop though, so is windy, but you can get out of the wind a bit if you camp over on the right as you enter the field.
The site shop sells fab homemade cakes.

Look here for reviews of Wiseman's Bridgecampsite . I have not stayed there but did walk on, had a look around and decided that I personally would not camp there. It is well located as it is handy for the pub, just across the road from the beach and walking distance to Saundersfoot. But it felt very unsafe to me - wide open to anyone and everyone visiting the pub or the beach to just walk on and off. The facilities looked basic at best and not clean.
A shame, with a bit of thought, TLC and investment the site could really capitalise on its excellent location.

There are loads of places that fit your description. You can afford to be a lot more choosey. One option is to join the C+CC as they had a THS (temporary holiday site) in Pembrey country park in the summer. I didn't go with them myself, but have stayed on the park previously. It has one of the best beaches in the country. There is also a CC site at the entrance to the park and the CC rally on both the site and in the park on a few occasions through the year. If you are a CC member, you could see about joining either the South or West Wales centres on a rally in the area. You don't have to be a member of the centre, just the club. Their websites are www.southwalescentre.co.uk and www.westwalescentre.co.uk respectively. South Wales Centre have a rally next April to Folly Farm for a weekend which is just a few miles from Tenby. You could join us for that and then move on to a site somewhere else afterwards.
Thanks for the replies. Has anybody been to Aberdovey in the summer holidays and if so what's it like, especially the beach and any rainy day options ?

The best site in West Wales is without question Dolbryn near Newcastle Emlyn read the reviews
Yep I will second this - we go to Dolbryn every year without fail. It's a rare family site which focuses on your family's enjoyment rather than how much money they can squeeze out of you.
You have beautiful New Quay within a 20 min drive which has a fabulous sandy beach, a castle, lots of lovely walks etc.
In reply to your question about Aberdovey - it's a nice little town with a great sandy beach & sand dunes but the water is VERY deep with strong currents - there are no shallows to speak of. Not the safest of beaches for a family holiday in my opinion.

Three Cliffs Bay is a great campsite for a family holiday. We haven't been for a few years but went several times when our daughter was younger. The best sand dunes for running down and playing in ever. Although it is high up from the beach, the cliff top is relatively safe as it is a steepish grassy, bushy type of cliff. You can walk down the cliff from the campsite. There is a ruined castle to explore to the left of the bay as well as the wooded valley.
We have sat outside our tent and watched the wild ponies run down the cliff and frolic in the sea!
Swimming is not supposed to be safe here, although we have all swum at this beach. However there is a shallow river running into the sea which is great for paddling and general larks.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
