Wonder if anyone can help me? I am looking to go to North Devon for a week next year and also somewhere else any suggestions? We are a family of 5 me OH and a 12 year old, 7 year old and 5 year old plus a dog. We have a cabanon tt and would like electric hook up. Hate hate hate commercial "haven" type sites but must have clean warm toilets and showers.
Any help would be much apprecisted

Hi Alison
Have you thought about joinint the Caravan Club. The sites are open to trailer tent owners and the showers and facilities are second to none. We always use their sites whenever possible because the showers and toilets are modern clean and warm (centrally heated in colder weather). Many sites have family bathrooms for families with small children. The CC have a site at Ilfracombe and two or three right on or near the coast in North Cornwall. Happy camping.

Jackie
Hi Alison. The site mentioned above near Woollacombe is "Damage Barton". We took out tt there in 2007 although admittedly it was a gale force wind we did find it a bit exposed as it is on the side of a hill. Otherwise I would recommend it as the facilities were beautifully kept.
The Park dene site at Croyde is nice and right on the beach and the camping field is far enough away from the entertainment type facilities to offer some peace.

Although we have camped several times in North Devon and love the area, all the sites we have visited have had small pitches, that are steep and are up or down hill from toilets.
Read the reviews and make your own mind up, but usually they are acurate and honest.
I totally agree with lloyd67....also i too find the reviews invaluable. We stayed at the campsite below ..was a gem, lovely toilets and showers. (in fact am a little doubtful if I ought to be telling pple about it..it may be full for ever more now!) It is between Bideford and Barstaple, both towns we love.Pitches are variable, we were lucky and had pitch with a sea view..in fact the best view we have EVER had on a site. However, the play park is a little out of the way, at one side of the site if you feel your kids will want to play on it. It's ok, a big field and swings etc. We didn't really use it cos we went last August and it was the MUDDIEST holiday I have EVER been on...wet, and slippy. Wellies would be a good thing to take with you cos altho it is a lovely site it is sloping and did get very muddy...but then I bet most sites did at that time cos I have nver known it rain so much at night! The owners are friendly and it's not a commercial site (like you i would hate that)
There are a couple of drawbacks...the nearby beach can be walked to but it is a bit of a way and VERY steep. Our girls are 17 ,15 and 10 and managed it fine..altho we do walk/hike anyway. You can drive to it in 5-10 mins It's not a sandy beach but at low tide has stunning rock pools. Also, we thought the pitches on the site were on the small side...we were nearly touching the next tent, although it wasn't a problem and our tent is big (Diablo 900)but then the pitch fees are cheap. Was a bit of a walk to the loos if you have a sea view too, and a little steep.
As you probably know, there is plenty tto do in the area, fab beaches and places like "The Big Sheep" whichis my girls favourite place EVER. Quirky, amusing and good fun. Oh...and the site takes dogs...I saw them there!
Sorry but we have been caught out for the past 2 years on holiday sights we have booked. Only because of the weather. We are now equipped to go 12 volts and gas so will look at where the weather is good ,and go for it.

Hidden Valley campsite beautiful wooded camp site with large pitches excellent ammenites, located between Braunton and Ilfacombe.Within ten minuets drive of Woolacombe, ilfracombe both with great beachs.Barnstaple is only 20minuets away which is a large town with cinema, theater, panniar markets ,banks, post officeand shops for every occasion.
If South Devon would be any good for you, I cant recommend Dornafield highly enough - dont know how to insert a link but you can search on the name. Its a fantastic, family run, non-commercial site. The pitches are HUGE, they have hook up pitches, accept dogs and have shower/toilet blocks that would shame a lot of hotels. Take your childrens bikes and you wont see them for hours! Its between Newton Abbot and Totnes, and even though we were there through the Summer Holiday monsoons last year we had our best camping trip ever and immediately booked to go back next summer with my sisters and their families. My only other comment would be that unless they have updated it, their website doesnt do justice to the site.
we enquired at Dornafield and if you're not in the caravan club it was very very expensive..with 3 kids, 2 adults, a tnet and no hook up. Our friends adore it there...and they are very fussy...but the price put us off....and we decided we didn't want to join the c & c club as we often camp with friends..who aren't in it...so would be a waste of money really. We've always had good sites..and I'm pretty fussy over showers and loos!
we went to the camping and caravan club sites at umberleigh in Devon not to far from Barnstaple and charmouth in lyme regis both highly recommended, as a suggestion why not find your site then locate it on google earth and have a real good look at where your planning to go before you even pick up the phone
happy camping Andy

I would second Hidden Valley - really beautiful site. We HATED Stowford Farm, not just because of the mud and rain, just something about it! Never stayed at Dornafield, as it is just up the road from us, but the area is really well located - you can get to the beach, Exeter or up on the moors in about 15 mins from there...
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
