hi every one i have tried very hard to book a tent pitch in the lakes for may bank holiday i cant find a site that will take a booking over the phone or computer so i think i will have to join one of the clubs so i can reserve a pitch i had a bad time last august thought it would be easy to get a site if i arrived on the thurs evening instead of fri like most people no such luck tried 3 sites finally got one near portinscale
Dont want that again only just got other half interested in sleeping under canvas. So i was wondering which one is the best i have read the previous reviews but they are all talking about caravans thanks

C&C club - they have all sites with tents & caravans allowed. That said, you don't have to be part of a club to go camping. Pick the area that you would like to be in and you can find all sorts of campsites from the search buttons above.

Although you can go to some CC sites with a tent as non-members I don't think you can become a member unless you have a caravan, motorhome or trailer tent/folding camper.
If you do a search you will find that this question has been asked numerous times in the past.

On a point of interest there are quite a number of CCC sites that will not take caravans. However, as a CC member I would recommend anyone with a caravan to join both clubs and see which they prefer, but with a tent this choice is not there as whilst there are about 70 CC sites that will accept tents there is no facility to be able to join the CC unless you have a caravan, a motorhome or a Trailer tent.

Why are you having problems booking over the phone or are they just full?
I think you may have to try contacting more than 3 sites for busy periods. If a site won't take the booking over the phone they usually send you a booking form.
I would join the c&cc if I were you, you will have more choice, though if it's anything like the cc you will have to get your skates on if it's for may bank hol a lot of cc sites are already booked up it's crazy, but thats how it is.
As someone has said above why not put a search in for the area you want and ring round, not sure what you mean about not being able to book on the phone, perhap you mean that the site is closed for the winter do you?
Just a point, but you can go to a C&CC site (and i presume a CC one too) without being a member. It does work out cheaper to be a member if you are going to use the sites for over 7 nights in the year, but you could still book. You would pay a non member charge of about £6 a night in addition to the site fee.
I presume the problem you've had is so few of the sites, Castlerigg Hall etc., not taking tent bookings? We usually go on a Wednesday to avoid this, but have been caught out too!

A lot of sites, certainly around Keswick, don't take bookings for tents at all. You turn up and hope there's space!

Not many CC sites will actually take tents, the book says they do but in reality they don't.In some sites they allow small backpacking tents.I was a CC member for 15 years and have both caravan and tents but in the past used my tents more than my caravan and never been able to use a family tent in any CC sites.Non members with backpacking tents can have pitch. This is my experience in Scotland,I would recommend the CCC if you really want to join a club for tenters.
The CC actively discourage tents, phone up and try to book a pitch for an avergae size family tent again I can only speak for Scotland but would imagine England and Wales are pretty much the same..

If you wanted to join CC that much surely you can just say i have a (insert real caravan name here ) and join up ?

I can't quite see the point of that when you turn up with a tent!
As a member the pitch prices are £7 a night cheaper, there are 70 CC sites that take tents ( as a comparison CCC have only just over 100 of their own sites ) so f the site you really want to visit is a CC and you want more than 5 days it is cheaper to join the club.

But Janus the OP has a tent, so surely he can't become a member of the CC, and benefit from the £7 a night saving, unless he lies and says he has a caravan which is probably not a good idea as I am sure they will find out when he turns up on site!

Aye thats what i was trying to get at ! and I cant see them demanding proof that you have a wobbly box if you turn up at a site that takes tents anyway. Personally i wouldnt like , but each to their own.

Whyshould they find out, if the site advertises that it takes tents and a CC member wants to use a tent rather than their supposed caravan who is to be any the wiser. I have been a CC member for 16 years and have never ever been asked what sort of van that I have when I renewed my membership, never been asked on site either but that may be because of that dirty great big thing that follows my car quite closely when I go.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
