Well I've literally just booked a week at Luss after reading the first page of glowing reviews on UKCS and being seduced by the loch side pitch photo on the C&CC website. Then I found an old copy of the C&CC mag which just happened to have an article on Scotland. Was not best pleased to read that the reviewer said his stay at Luss was spoilt by the non-stop road noise from the A82. Also reread all the 26 UKCS reviews and 2 mentioned the road noise and 2 mentioned the noisy events at the neighbouring hotel. Am now thinking of trying to switch the booking to Millarochy (will C&CC let me do this? You don't get if you don't ask I s'pose) So 22 reviewers out of 26 didn't mention noise at Luss - are they deaf or was it just not an issue? What is your experience of either site?

Yes the main road runs right past the Luss site. When we were there we were aware of it initially, but it kind of blends into the background.
Milarochy Bay is a nicer site in a better location but the approach road is awkward with a caravan so we have never stayed there - though loads of others do.

We were assistants at Millarochy Bay in 1990 and loved it. Much quieter than Luss but the road from Balmaha takes a sharp turn up a steep bit of road. Its OK if you are prepared for it although we did have some that didn't make it. Its in the most beautiful location on the loch side and nicer than Luss. I don't know if you can change your booking but I don't see why not. We have been retired some years now and the rules have changed!!!!!
Millarochy Bay - One way in and out - I regularly used to tow 23 foot boats with a minibus with no probs, I don’t think the road access is a deal breaker. Much quieter, More midges, more wildlife, more relaxed. On the west highland way – and regularly used by people who are backpacking.
Luss – a village that is bonny but very, very , very touristy all the shops have tourist tat. A road that is a major route north, sorry I stayed at the campsite but it was so long ago that I can't remeber what it was like

We went two years ago and loved Luss, but we we;re in the caravan so couldn't hear the road m=noise at night, I have to say I didn't notice it after a while and its a faint hum,
We personally loved the site as the dogs loved swimming in the loch and we liked the walk into the village,
Millarochy bay is also lovely as we had a nose round, you can change your bookings on the C & CC, your deposit should just be transferred over if you ring them, You have given them plenty of notice.
We would definitely go back to Luss if we we're taking the van, but Millarochy bay if we took the tent (due to the road to Millarochy as we have a big caravan)
------------- Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.
I live close to Loch Lomond and regularily use the A82.
However, when we are meeting up with friends (campers) coming north, we stay and overnight with them at the Luss site.
Yes the road noise is annoying if you are used to not hearing traffic at all.
Yes, even if you are used to traffic noise, then the Fish Lorries coming down the A82 from 5 in the morning onwards, can be annoying.
However, the noises you can get on any campsite necessitate us carrying a packet of Boots Wax Earplugs and these are always handy at bed time and through the night.
We spend more time asleep in the van than on any other activity and a good night's sleep is imperitive to a good camping trip.
Personally I reckon that a packet of Boots Earplugs would be considerably cheaper than driving halfway round the countryside looking for a queiter site. One packet will do 2 people for a two week camping holiday.
Thanks everybody - I think we'll try to switch to Millarochy. Both myself and OH are quite light sleepers and we live near a busy main road so part of the allure of camping is being away from it all. I'm hoping in May the midges won't be too bad! Have still got 3 bottles of SkinSoSoft from last year if they're a problem. We're tenting so hopefully the road shouldn't be an issue. (Can't be much worse than Hardknot Pass surely!)

With a tent, the road should be no problem. It just turns of the Loch side sharply and straight up quite steeply. As long as you are prepared for it you shouldn't have a problem. There is a garage in Balmaha on the right hand side and keep your eyes on the road from there instead of looking at the Loch on the left. We were there throughout the summer and didn't find the midges a big problem.
