We were looking at this site lastnight, and it is beautiful. Just wondered if anyone could answer a few of our queries/concerns please.
Wind - read a couple of comments about high winds causing damage to tents. Our indy has stood up to high winds at several locations but we've never camped right on the coast like that. Is it a real problem? We'd be going August time.
Midgies - never camped in Scotland at all so is this a major problem?
Roads - It's a long drive up there for us, well over 500 miles and I'm the only driver. Is it a good route, main roads or narrow winding ones? The distance isn't a problem as we would break the journey with a Travelodge stay-over on the way there and back - fantastic now we've found out dogs can stay at Travelodge!!
Well, anything else anyone can give us infomation on.
Thanks very much.

I can't believe no-one has replied to you! I've been waiting, too! I know this part of Scotland but haven't stayed at this site. You're much less likely to get midgies next to the coast and they are very light wee things so the wind blows them away. The chances are you won't be bothered by them at Clachtoll. I would rather the wind than midgies! The midges are worst on the west and central parts of Scotland and like I said if there is a wind/or breeze they'll be gone.
The main roads in the Highlands are excellent because there is hardly any traffic. Here in Central Scotland they are dreadful - pot-holes everywhere! There are many twisty single-track roads toobut lots of passing-places. Fuel is going to be more expensive in remote places too so be aware of that. The scenery is just amazing up north and the weather changes in seconds! - take swim-wear as well as woolly hats and waterproofs. I wdon't know why I'm going to France for the summer should be staying here!
I would read the 30 reviews of this site which cover just about all you will need to know about Clachtoll. I've stayed there but as I always holiday on the west coast I am used to the treacherous elements, midges and single track roads so no point in me giving you my opinion. Jim and Ishbel are the most friendly owners you will come across though, and when the weathers good.............its REALLY good

Just had an email back to say all EHU pitches gone, so now enquired to Ardmair which also looks very nice.
I guess we are booking late but unfortunately my husband has been on short time and then recently was facing possible redundancy, only found out his job was safe last week, we usually have our hols all booked by this time!

was at Clachtoll last August and the site and owners are brilliant. However, on the first night we were there, an almighty wind blew up during the night and many people were outside at about three in the morning wieghting down their tents in a desperate way. By morning the site looked empty with about 15 tent wrote off and slung into the nearest bin. it was terrible to see peoples holidays ruined and cut short but at the end of the day it's an act of god I suppose. I for one will return to Clachtoll on my next visit, we really enjoyed it there.

you probably seen these pics Tracey, although we didnt have as far to go(I'm the only driver also) the road from Edinburgh to Inverness was a lot faster than I thought it would be, we did five days a Rosemarkie and then on to Clachtoll, the road to Lochinver isnt bad either, from Lochinver the road is single track I found it a bit hairy but I was towing for the first time. We loved it, only one very windy night and everyone seemed to be OK. The scenery is out of this world, even if you don't stay at Clachtoll give it a visit and you can take the coastroad past the site Drumbeg and Kylesku
Thanks Barbara, that's a really useful site. Like the idea of maybe taking a ferry ride out to Stornoway, something different to do (if dogs are allowed!) It looks a beautiful place for a keen photographer, I'll drive the rest of them mad. Sunsets look lovely, I've been known to sit for quite a while to get a decent sunset shot. I think, although Clachtoll looks beautiful, that perhaps Ardmair may be better suited to us. We've got our Travelodge booked in Cumbria for the journey there, then going to do a straight journey coming home. Booked for 11 nights at Ardmair. Looking out for Avon Dry Oil spray and body lotion on special offer now

The old man of Stoer isn't too far away. You could still drive to Clachtoll for a picnic and then drive the mile or so to start the walk to the "stack". A good walk and a good opportunity for a photographer and a lovely day out! You've made a good choice going to Ardmair as you have lots to see (including Clachtoll) in both directions. Wester Ross (south of Ullapool) is a wonderful place to drive and explore.
Tracey we stayed at Clachtoll last July and did the trip over to Stornaway from Ullapool along with our blind little dog.
There are dedicated areas on the ferry for dogs as well as access to the open air decks.
Look out for dolphins if you do the crossing.
I drove over night to Clachtoll from near Manchester and it is a long drive but worth it when you see the scenery and meet the friendly locals.
Clachtoll is 700.4miles from us....and I'd drive it tomorrow, if I didn't have to go to work. Jim is the best host I've yet met, the site is peace beyond compare, and the location is sublime, assuming you like views, quiet, scenery, and are comfortable without the animal that is Tesco nearby.
I'm booked in at Clachtoll for the Springbank May bank holiday (over nighting at Abingdon + Blair Atho)l ... my cousin + family live in Lochinver ... he thinks late May/June historically is the best time to go - driest and midge free ... I've been to Lochinver 10+ times .... however this will be my first time camping .... my journey from Sheffield was historically (B4 caravan) ... overnighter or longer South of Glasgow - East Kilbride (to see family) ... an early start then up the A9 ...with a one hour stop at Pitlochry - at the theatre for lunch ..... then a one or two hour stop at Inverness ... including a supermarket shop .... then upto lochinver .... which is a further two hours .... total travel time from South Glasgow - 6 hours, so 9-10 hours with stops ...
Over the years, I've stopped at Aviemore, Boat of Garten, Ullapool, and also gone up the A82 .... all are recommended
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
