After searching for good sites and reading through the forums i am quite worried now, as i will start a motorcycle tour next week without planning the tour to much ahead and so have not made any booking for a site. Want to be as free as possible to see where it gets, but will be staying mainly in SouthEast England and SouthWales (hoping for pembrokeshire). I don´t need EHU´s, hard standings or proper facilities (well, a toilet would be great)

Am i nuts thinking i could just show up and getting a pitch?

Not really no. A lot of sites don't take bookings at all, so provided you turn up at the right time to these sites i.e. early on a friday (mid-afternoon at latest) , or anytime sunday to thursday then you should be okay.

Also some of the larger sites that do take bookings make special provisions (i.e. an extra field!) for backpackers and such and you may find they'll let you stop there.

And on a bike, even if you do get knocked back at least you know you can always ride to the next place.
