Hi all, New to this site, have searched the web with little results. We currently live in France but in recent months things have become very difficult. My wife, myself and our two dogs, twin axle fendt 5m90 and transit van are looking for a permenant pitch in sw england for a few months whilst we try and get back on our feet and wait for our french home to sell. I understand there are some difficulties finding a perm site for a twin axle and if anyone knows anywhere or can give us some advice then please do, just don't say stay where you are, the reality is france is ok for a holiday, to live and work here is virtually impossible under retirement age. I am 44 the wife 36....any sites you guys can recommend, Devon, North dorset, areas ideal. Thanks in advance.

Hi snowy, just had a look and neither site accepts commercial vehicles, I presume by commercial vehicle they mean my transit, but how else are you meant to tow a twin axle van from france to Uk, never seen a twin axle being towed by anything less than a van of some description....any other recommendations?
Most sites have a 28 ruling enforced on them by the local licensing authorities, so doubt you would be able to stay more than 28 days on any site. Search for sites that are open all year, or why not look at the sites advertising job vacancies and see if they require you to have your own accommodation.
By the way, we have a 26ft twin axle caravan and tow with a Kia, they are a great tow vehicle.
it's 2.4m, 8 feet wide. My brother in law said you could not tow a twin axle with a vehicle that was less than 3.5ton in the UK, he must have his facts wrong.

So if I was French and I wanted to come over on holiday are you saying that I would not be allowed on UK sites because I have a french registerd caravan and a uk transit but also french registered, sounds rather bizarre.
Sorry Robbie, but you might well find it difficult. Our caravan is 7ft 6ins wide and we tow with a 4x4. I can't give any advice but hope you get sorted.

I don't think jennifernn was referring to the fact that your van is French registered, rather to the fact that you tow with a commercial vehicle combined with the fact that the caravan is a twin-axle.
It's a shame things didn't work out for you in France, hope you get sorted out in the UK with a site, but I must agree with other posts: it won't be easy.
No, you will be fine towing here while you are French registered. But sites still may not like to take you as Transit vans and twin axle vans are often associated with the travelling community, some of whom have a dubious reputation apparently.
Your brother-in-law is almost correct however. It is not the number of axles that counts, but the width and length of the caravan.
If your caravan is over 2.3 metres wide, here it can only be towed by a vehicle that weighs OVER 3500 kg kerb weight. If you are going to stay here you will need to get UK plates and registration for the Transit and will have to comply with these rules.
As a French registered "visitor" you are allowed to tow with whatever is legal in France.
You could always join one of the clubs, Caravan Club, or Camping and Caravanning Club and then use cl or cs sites for 28 days at a time. These are usually cheaper and would possibly give you a bit more flexibility as to where you camp for the time it takes to get back on your feet.
