Hi - off to Hollands Wood, New Forest this weekend, got a few questions! First trip with DCs! Have huge list of things to pack, but still feel woefully underprepared. Possibly because haven't started packing huge list of things...
- What is the ground like? Have just bought new tent (vango tigris) but rumour has it the tent pegs are a bit rubbish. Is the ground at Hollands Wood particularly rocky?
- Can anyone recommend a beach within fairly easy driving distance? Good for 5 year olds and 1 year olds.
- Is there a supermarket nearby?
- Any tips on where to pitch?
- Is it particularly exposed/windy - do I need a windbreak?
ummm, that's it for the moment. any other tips welcomed

I can only answer a couple of thhings. Yes there is a Tesco express about 10 -15 mins walk away in Brockenhurst.
Some areas are windier than others. When you arrive the right hand side of the site that over looks open land is pretty but more windy. However, the other side is then nearer road noise.
We went to Hollands Wood a couple of years ago and we went to Highcliffe beach, which I'm sure isn't too long a drive away. There was parking, toilets and nice sandy beach. We had a 3 year old and 11 month old then.

hi if i remember right Hollands wood is the site on the main road as already said the l/h side is close to the road and also pitches are between trees the r/h side is much better and leads out to open/forrest land, just along from the campsite theres a running stream with a splash area that kids and big kids play in as long as you are careful theres an area where little ones can play my little ones that are now big kids have played there many times, theres many beaches along the coast going towards the south more all within 30 mins 40 mins drive if i remember correctly new milton has a very good one, also many other great family things to do localy
We went to Hollands wood this easter and found out that the best veiws of the ponies are on the side away from the road, but if you head to the top (north end) near the woods you can see the wild deer in the evening and is also a great play ground for the kids. My best bet is 2/3 up on the from the entrance on the north/east side.

We have been caravaning and tenting at Hollands Wood on and off for 35 + years, and we find that the heath side of the tarmac road is best so that the kids can run free and be kept an eye on, the main road side seems to be frequented by the younger set !
Heed the signs concerning the horses !! and keep the tent flaps closed as there are one or two rogue horses that will enter and rummage around for food !! and the best way to deter/remove them is with a bottle of water kept close to hand to squirt them with....................
The ground is fairly soft, but tree roots can be a problem, you will need a pair of mole grips to get tent pegs out afterwards!
The best interesting beach nearby (Although not sandy) is Lepe country park, which is a few miles past Exbury gardens, there is a view of the I.O.W and shipping in and out of Southampton Water, and at weekends the yachts from Cowes, and in our view well worth a visit ( We took our 11 year granddaughter from New York there last week and she had a great time).
Have a good time, would love to know how you get on..............................
Im off over to hollands wood next wednesday (29th) :D Happens to be my 20th birthday :D But you're in luck, cos im not a party animal and i prefer the peace and quiet.
How long you staying there? We're doing weds night to sunday morning because of work!
As you can imagine, ill be paying close attention to this thread for tips and what not!
wow - lots of helpful tips! thanks so much. The camp sounds lovely - not sure we'll need to go to the beach! We'll aim for the right hand side some way up from the entrance then. Hope it's not too crowded. We are hoping to pitch 3 tents near each other - the campsite said no problem with that if we can find the pitch. so we are leaving early friday morning. Fudge - have packed as many torches as I can find!! I'll post back to let you know how we get on! Shadow - we are only staying two nights so i'll report back before you depart!
We have just come back from a 2 night stay, and I agree with the above.
We found a nice flat pitch quite easily, but as the grass was very thin, sorry extremely thin in places our dog did pick up a lot of dirt when lying down, even worse when it showered all this came into our tent with him, so beware of bare patches.
Saw a pony raid a tent in the first 10mins.
Try and keep away from the right side of the site as you look at it, you will get all the traffic noise, the other side looked nicer but we didn't realise that till we had pitched our tent.
You will love it the facilities etc are very good, and yes it is very dark!
We sadly also saw a dead pony in Brockenhurst, hit and run case, very very sad. ( not sure why I shared that bit)
Any way enjoy
