St Neots CCC site is quite close to Cambridge. we stayed there last year for a few days, nice riverside location and walking distance into town. Ticks the boxes for good toilets and showers.
Try Northey Lodge on the outskirts of Peterborough - on here in campsite search. A lovely, very flat site separated into different 'areas' and sheltered by tall leylandii trees. We stayed for a 1-night weekend - booked on the last minute - a couple of years ago and really liked it.

We're booked there next Friday for 1 night, as a stop before carrying on to the Tunnel for our crossing on Saturday afternoon. But are there still any pitches available for Saturday? I tried to book last Tuesday, and there was no availability for the whole weekend. Had another look on Wednesday and somebody must have cancelled because there were 2 pitches available for both Friday and Saturday. So I booked Friday, phew!

I'm sure that the C&CC don't allow 1 night bookings during weekends
... we ended up with the kind offer of a hay field (cut) so camped there (took the portaloo) .... all on our own bar the ponies in the neighbouring field ... next to a derelict windmill which now houses barn owl and kestrel nesting boxes!
we were lucky enough to be there when the bird guys were checking the boxes so were invited into the windmill and saw 3 baby barn owls fly out when the box was checked!
new tent was great ... our first night in it .... phew!

it was just outside of Huntingdon .... we were down to look at a pony and my OH was due to show one of their foals inhand at Equifest the next day so they offered us the field!
