I need a site in the north of England - Yorkshire? Cumbria? - where we can camp in out tent, and our friends can have their caravan next to us - not in another field. Basic facilites - showers, loos, wash up point etc and we'd like a play park area for the children on site - age 3,6,6&8 - we don't want a nightclub, Tv room etc. Any ideas?

We do this every year and last year went to Golden Square Caravan And Camping Park near Helmsley, lovely site and they were very accommadating.

This year it was Sherwood Forest Holiday Park but this may be too south for you!

Try Akebar Park near Leyburn. They don't do reviews but I love it and the park has been full almost every weekend this season, so don't knock it till you've tried it as it really is a lovely site.

Sheriff Hutton Caravan and Camping Club Site (near York) or Boroughbridge C & CC SIte (Off A1 near Ripon but classed as York). Both are smaller club sites but have nice showers/ toilets etc. and a play area for the kids.

Our kids (6 and 8) really enjoyed both sites. Boroughbridge has a town a few mins away and a Morrissons whereas Sheriff Hutton is a bit more isolated so you need to jump in the car to get to the nearest shops - or leave it at Monks Cross Park and Ride and get the free bus into York (kids loved this aswell!).

Spiers House in North Yorkshire (nearest town pickering) its a forestry commision site that has a playpark area at the top of the site. We camped in the bottom electric hook up field in our tent but there were caravans and hotor homes along side us. Plenty in the woods to entertain the kids building with the logs and sticks. Toilets and showers looked new and are spotless along with washing up area. Wardens patrol the site on mountain bikes helping people and generally making sure everyone is ok and happy. Some very nice local ales in the small shop where all items are reasonably priced. Will be going back myself nextyear definately.
