We are going to New England Bay CC site for a week at the end of May. While the site looks lovely, we do like days out and I was hoping for some recommendations from you lot! Its not an area of Scotland we've been to before. We have a 13 yr old and like castles, country houses etc and also wildlife, boat trips. Also nice places to eat .Any ideas gratefully received, Im a bit concerned that the area may be too remote. Thank you.

We have been four times to New England Bay site, it's on a great beach and we always enjoy it. Just in case you fancy a rest from cooking - last time we were there a fish & Chip van came to site on the Friday and they were really good.
Port Patrick is nice to go to with some good pubs and a lovely walk to Dunskey Castle up on the cliffs. If you carry on round past the castle their are some beautiful views out to sea. Logan Botanical gardens are not far from the site if i remember rightly, however we did not visit.
I hope you have a great time and that we get to go back soon!!
The fish and chip van is fine but for a really good meal that is not expensive just go over the hill to Port Logan and the Port Logan Inn, the fishy specials on the board are fantastic.
We have been to New England Bay for the last 7 or 8 years and love it, it is so quiet and peaceful around there. A good afternoon out is to go down to the lighthouse at thr Mull of Galloway, the wildlife down there is brilliant and standing watching the sea from the clifftops as it swirls around the headland is quite wonderful. There is also a nice and spectacularly placed cafe down there.
Port Patrick is worth a visit, and we always enjoy a walk around Stranraer, watching the ferries come and go. If you want a day out I believe that daytrips to Ireland are not particularly expensive as foot passengers.

For a licence dated 1997 or later you must add together the plated max weight of the caravan and trailer, if the total is 3500 or less you can tow it. You may even tow a caravan with a MAM greater than the cars unladen mass the restriction was removed in 2013

Thank you all for your replies. With a 13 yr old boy and a dog I think the beach will be top of the list, but I like to see my surroundings too. The fishy specials in Port Logan sound right up our street. I have fond memories of a dripping wet afternoon, just me and OH sitting steaming in a harbourside restaurant in Oban, eating lobster and fries!! Bliss!!
Stock up on food on your way the shops are few and far between.
Its a few years since we were there but i seem to remember the pub in Port Logan did not allow kids in but that may have changed now.
I loved the site and the area but Lynda did not like it much.Watch out on site for the people with boats, they go fishing in the bay and may have a few spare fresh fish.
Go rock pooling at the end of the bay when the tide is out i have never seen as many fish and crabs anywhere else.
Around the lighthouse on the Mull is fantastic and its the most southerly tip of Scotland.
There is a shop in Drummore which sells most things, but the nearest supermarket is in Stranraer about 12 miles away. The Port Logan inn has two rooms, one is the public bar and the other is a dining room where children are welcome, and which is a quieter place to sit and much lighter.

Yes I do remember it, the one with Cindy Beale (!) in. I remember being envious at the time, just sell up and bugger off! Wonderful idea. Maybe caravanning is the next best thing.
Only problem I can forsee is sourcing a supply of Strongbow for OH but Im not going to let that worry me!
We camped here for 2 weeks last August, and have booked again for this year. Site was very busy but a short walk and you think you have the beach to yourselves. Great for the dogs and I think just about everyone had at least one. Brilliant site but it is remote, ideal for me though
