I love the lakes, have been going to both the north and south from childhood.
There so many good places that I cant list them all but here's a few places that we usually head to on the northern side
Rheged - good, for when it rains has indoor play theatres displays etc - not far from penrith at all maybe 5 min.
Ullswater - great place to go, either bbq by the lake or go on the steamers or if hire a wee boaty and zip about the lake, well i say zip think there a speed restriction of about 5 miles an hour-lol
Trotters wild animal park - loads of animals, think it had play area's etc
Whinnlatter forest park- amazing cycle trails, and home to ospreys at certain times of the year- theres also a big rope course tho i've never been brave enough and kids have to be 10 i think -so mine havent tried it, if i remember rightly there a good play park tho
Keswick- is great market town and although i can see the interest myself my little one always wants to go and see the pencil museum
Mirehouse- now we found this quite by accident last time we were there- lovely counrty house with fab adventure playgrounds - the house opens for a bit in afternoon and has lovely music playing and the house guides are the owners/family members- my lil ones loved spotting all the owls in the hunt thing.
Skiddaw- last but by no means least a visit to the north lakes cant be the same without climbing this one, i always think that this looks easier than others but half way i'm always doubting my logic.
thats just a few places i can think of hand for the north end of the lakes,
if you head south youve got windermere, beatrix potter, grizedale, coniston lake, havethewaite steam railway and loads of other stuff
thanks for the replies, much appreciated ,faulkner i really like the look off lowther, looks a nice familey site i nearley booked this afternoon, but thought i better let my wife have a say .Is it a nice site for tents?,they have plenty gallery pictures on ther web page but none off the tent pitches, just wondering. pixi thanks for the great heads up on the area, i think i am defo going to go to lowther, but looking at the lakes area in general it is stunning, and think it is some were i would like to camp over the years.Gave me plenty of food for thought thanks again david

If you need EHU the pitches are used by either tent or caravan. There are some without EHU by the play area but a bit of a walk to the loos - if they are not jam-packed they normally let you wander around to pick one you fancy and then let them know the pitch number. Lots of red squirrels darting about playing up and down the trees.
Another good thing is you can turn up from 8am in the morning and stay until late on the day you are leaving - none of this off manic packing away as you need to be off by 11 or 12!
Quite a well stocked shop on site too and Somerfield and Morrisons in Penrith - although I did hear the Morrisons had burnt down.
Penrith is a fair drive from the main bit of the Lakes, we always stay a couple of miles outside Keswick so you have the stunning scenery out of your window plus are in a good spot to access the main (often busy) lakes like Ullswater, Coniston & Windermere but also near the A66 to head round to the quieter and in my opinion best lakes of Ennerdale, Loweswater and the must see Wastwater.
Have a look at Lanefoot Farm, the facilities are basic but clean and it's in a great spot and very child friendly.
This was the view from out window there :-
And this is one I took at Wastwater last September:-
Esther1 stop publicizing Lanefoot Farm it will get busy and it will always be full when we want to go! Only joking of course Lanefoot Farm is our favourite campsite, off there in less than 3 weeks! can't wait so excited. I just love waking up, walking to the toilet block and then looking up and seeing that spectacular view. Always puts a smile on my face.
Daveboy - from what I can recall most of the pitches are grass but with a gravel bit for awnings - but not absolutely sure. There are definitely some all grass with EHU. Give them a call to check.
Just back from Eskdale C&CC site - been visiting the Lake District for years and this, by far, has been my favourite. What a beautiful area, wonderful walks straight from the site, great places to visit within a short drive (Wastwater being one of them) and stunning scenery. The wee steam railway (a stone throw walk from the site) to Ravenglass worth the trip, drive over hardknot pass, half an hour to the beach at St Bees, 3 pubs within a few minutes from the site doing lovely meals......and my husband tells me it had the nicest chemical disposal point he has ever seen (complete with sink, soap and handtowels!!! LOL).
Daveboy, i know its not Penrith, but not far , Braithwaite nr Keswick has a site called Scotgate, all i can say is its excellent. Love going there, Check there website out. They must have they most plush toliet block going.
