Next month we are going camping for the first time with a dog.
We called one of our favorite sites and asked about dogs being allowed and were told they are very welcome but only on certain fields.. no problem, we booked a pitch on one of those fields.
Then I was thinking about where the dog will/won't be allowed so we called and were told that the dogs are not allowed anywhere expect the permitted fields but there are exits to the forests for nice walks.
We have stayed on many sites and have obviously encountered dogs but have never really taken any notice of where they are/are not allowed.
So my question is... what is the norm?

Hi I'm probably not the best person to answer this as we've only ever been to 2 campsites! We take our two dogs with us and I think the answer is that there isn't really a 'norm' except that they aren't allowed in any buildings - showers, shops etc. Of the 2 we went to, one had a dog walk and the other had dog exercise field which was great, not enclosed but a bit away from the campsite and pretty big. You always seem to be required to keep them on a lead around the campsite and, of course, pick up after them.
Otherwise, ours were with us by the tent and we all came and left through the main entrance.
We have been on lots of campsites with our dogs and the norm is kept on a lead on site and pick up if any accidents. There are a lot of sites that have designated dog walks on the site.No dogs in showers, toilets or shop. I can`t comment on bars/ clubs on sites as I dont go to sites with them One thing I would say if you are going near a beach check dogs are allowed on it
.Happy camping.

Our experience is pretty much the same as everyone above, dogs on leads on site and not allowed in any buildings, it's the same rules as any public space, just keep them under close control and don't let them be a nuisance to anyone, we tend to set up a windbreak "yard" for them so they can have a bit of freedom in there and do their "business" where people can't see.
You'll find that some sites seem to welcome dogs whereas others seem to just "permit" them.

We do the same next to the awning. I usually take a long lead aswell so that when she's on site and if it's quiet we tie her up so she has a bit of movement - we did that last weekend when we were pitched next to a river, so she had enough freedom to go in if she wanted but was still restrained by the lead.
We only go to places were dogs are welcomed and not just "put up with", and I would never chose a site without an onsite dog walk/or woodland access as the dog is part of the reason we took up camping & caravanning anyway so we have to ensure the park suits her first!
Ours is Always on a lead - or tether around the caravan. We take ours around the site unless signs forbid (never seen any) and obviously to anyt designated dog walk area. Don't take him in buildings and don't allow him on other people's pitches. Always pick up his leavings.
