Hi, can anyone recommend campsites in Derbyshire that would be good for family of 5 (2 x 10 year olds, 5 year old, 2 Adults) next to a shallow stream or lake etc for children to play in, kind of like Dovedales with the stepping stones and great scenery. We want to take the kids away for a long weekend and do some exploring and paddling. We've just come back off our beach camping holiday and would like go somewhere a bit different. Have been to Laneside, Hope and Hayfields last year, would like to try somewhere else. Must have toilet and shower lol.

Many many thanks for any suggestions.

You could look at Greenhills Caravan Site at Ashford-in-the-Water which is near Bakewell. Although it doesn't have a river or lake you can easily walk down to Ashford in a few minutes where the river is available. The adjoing fields are used for picnics and it's always very popular with children. Nice village too.

See site report on here.

Have a look for sites around Carsington water, there are many watersports available, fishing, canoe hire, sailing, great kids play areas and cafe gift shops and takeawy all surrounded  by stunning scenery, and owned by Severn-Trent water, and the best bit is that apart from the usual car park charge its all free to visit. you hire the cycles and canoes by the hour, and they have great picnic and BBq facilities.

Ashbourne and Dovedale are within a half hour drive away, as is Bakewell and Matlock, again with areas for children to paddle. The CC blackwell plantation site is within walking distance and there are several other sites within a mile on the approach road via Dog Lane at Hulland ward. The new one thats recently oppened is called The Pudding Room, and there is also afarm site about 100yds down the road from it and near to the Knockerdown Pub, but im unsure what facilities they have regards showers and toilets. prices start from £4.75 a night for a basic pitch acording to the board outside. The views from these sites are stunning as they overlook the resevoir and right down across the valley.

hi

there is a campsite at Hulme End near to Hartington,   there are 2 fields but the one opposite the pub (next to the farm house) has a shallow stream running next to it that kids can paddle and fish in. It used to be called Bank House Farm

Basic toilets and showers used to be at the farm (but check it out as i know it has changed hands).

We live locally and often used to go up here just for a night or 2 so the kids could play in the stream...

edited to add Hulme End is actually in Staffordshire but i think Hartington is still Derbyshire if that helps in finding the site.   It is in the Peak National Park on the road from Leek to Hartington.    We contemplated buying the site when it came up for sale as we love it so much.
