Comrie Croft is another fantastic woodland site - it is quite small (about 8 ish pitches?) but does accept dogs. Sadly we have moved on to a caravan which it isn't suitable for...so I won't mind if it gets booked up now!
I'd love to camp 'in the woods' but hear so many people complain of sap etc from trees falling onto tents and not being able to get it off.
Is this a problem many people have had and does it depend on tree type or particular area's of the country?
Lots of people camp in woods and seem happy to do so. I don't want to put anyone off but the first time I camped under trees I arrived home with my tent pole sleeves infested with earwigs. Apparently they drop onto the tent from trees and make a home in the dark pole sleeves which are ideal places for earwigs.
On another occasion when I had a caravan and pitched under a tree loads of sticky buds/sap/flower heads came raining down onto the caravan and my car...made a right mess.
Also, heavy branches/sharp twigs can fall off trees in windy weather. In rainy weather, when the rain stops, it continues to rain for quite some time under trees as the trees shed all the water they retain in the leaves.
Extremely rare but a couple of years ago somebody was killed in a caravan when a tree came down in windy weather and crushed it...this is rare though so sleep tight and don't have nightmares.
I now try to steer clear of trees if I can

Found it and it looks lovely a shame no dogs
They do take dogs but just not in the wooded area. The first bit of the site which has hard standing pitches too allows dogs. It also is very attractive & does have trees ! The walking in that area is fabulous.

Bob I've pitched tents under trees for years, never had an earwig problem but of course you could do, they like to be in dark (& dampish) places so can be under bark in trees rather than open ground.
Resin/sap is a bu**er to remove off most things though. Never had any on my tent thankfully. I'll take my chances /put up with the rest as I like trees. And they don't make much noise late at night .... Sorry, couldn't resist that !

Hi Bob, you are right about earwigs, however this wasn't a problem in the woods but when we were in Dorset in an open field! They were blummin' everywhere, I even brought them home in my bell tent to London, so they got a free sightseeing tour..
Armchair camper that looks gorgeous, plan to do some of Scotland next year and this looks like a must-do, thank you for posting those lovely photographs. Did you see any Red squirrels? I used to go to a caravan site as a kid in Formby and my little bunk had a window next to the pinewoods and all the red squirrels were in abundance those days.

Hi there Liverbird. I have been to that area of Scotland lots, it's absolutley beautiful & if you like wildlife & outdoor sports I'd thoroughly reccommend going there. Haven't actually stayed at that particular sithe but we did pop in to check it out - we were staying at Glenmore (just up the road) - & it was very nice & also smaller & cheaper. I'm sure there will be squirrels about - saw plenty at Glenmore !
You ought to visit that part of Scotland if you can, favourite haunt of ours due to it's sheer beauty & the wildlife/walks etc.

Yes, there are red squirrels there. Such a beautiful area I was back yesterday with my husband, we took the bikes and cycled through the forest. As well as the beauty there are masses of things to do and places to visit - see here for Rothiemurcus activities alone. Also the osprey centre, wildlife park, steam railway, trekking with reindeer (would you believe) and the Landmark centre (great for kids and adults alike), the funicular railway up Cairngorm mountain, etc, etc.
It's only a couple of hours away for us yet we haven't been to that area much for ages. I certainly intend to visit more regularly in future.

My ones came from Dorset as well...perhaps it's earwig country
I used to store my tent indoors until then. It is now kept in the shed.
