We're heading down to Newquay from Doncaster in August - it's a long enough journey but this year we'll have a caravan stuck to the back of us, so fancy breaking the journey up with a stop off on the way.

All the sites I've found so far require a minimum of 2 nights stay - can anyone point us in the direction of somewhere we can stay just for the one (Friday) night?

Thank you

You will need to stop south of Bristol as the M5 around Bristol is like a car park on saturdays in August

It's roughly 350 miles from Doncaster to Newquay so the halfway point is between Gloucester and Bristol. You might be better staying north of Bristol then setting off as early as you can the next day to avoid the rush-hour round Bristol - as Kenies says, the stretch of the M5 from north of the M4 interchange to Weston Super Mare and beyond is a nightmare in the school summer hols.

I drive from the midlands to Cornwall a lot (at least half-a-dozen times each year) and I've found congestion depends on which days you are travelling. Friday evenings and Saturday mornings are probably the most congested times round Bristol; but weekday morning rush hour traffic is bad in the working week. If you are stuck with Friday/Saturday, my advice would be to travel as late as possible on Friday and as early as possible on Saturday.

Thanks for your replies.

We've been to Cornwall a couple of times before and yes, have had the joy of sitting in solid traffic next to the RAC building near Bristol.

We're planning to set off on Friday morning so will hopefully miss the Friday evening traffic - and then get going early Saturday morning.

We've used The George Inn(Riverside Caravan Park)at Cambridge several times, for one night stop-overs on the way down south.

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/details.asp?revid=7751&map=on#maphere

It is only 5-10mins off the M5 J13..

Nice pub, that does good food and the tidy campsite has a little play area if you've got kiddies(..although there is an unfence stream/brook).

Oops sorry I just know it's somewhere between here and Newquay!

We've booked at Warren Farm - looks great and is more than halfway there. Thanks for all your help!

There is a RAC building near the M5 on the outskirts of Bristol on the southbound M5.
