Shame you only want to travel an hour as ( IMO) THE best forest site is Beddgelert in snowdonia ,its in the woods witha desly wooded area next door ,accesible by a small arched footbridge that my kids named Terabithia :)
Just a thought but how far are you from the Pickering area ? ,probably more like a couple of hours I think ? This place is fab and there is a campsite within the boundries ( so you get free entry ) http://www.forestry.gov.uk/dalbyforest

have you looked at Fallowfield dene at Acomb near Hexham? It's straight along the A69 from you.
We went the other year and although it wasn't for us; too many seasonals and we didn't like being in among the trees; the facilities are very good.
skiTTish beat me to it - Dalby forest- slightly more than an hour psooibly nearer 2 but lots to see and do in the area, also walks and mountain biking in the forest.
