Hi, just looking for any recommendations for tent camping in the general Glasgow area (say within an hours drive) Have looked at the reviews on here but most seem to be very caravan orientated. We're looking for something suitable for families so a play area would be a bonus, but as long as ball games are permitted it would be fine.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Not sure how far past Glasgow Balloch is, but its at the bottom end of Loch Lomond, its a nice place, we stayed at Lomond Woods Caravan Park, there where tents there aswell, but I am talking about 3 years ago. Its near a few pubs and restaurants, shopping complex, mc donalds, worth a look at their website.
Good luck with your search.

just had a look at their website..... sorry but they no longer take tents, thats a shame
Cheers, I've had a wee look at the Strathclyde Country Park one. We are actually from Glasgow and want to camp as a group with several families of friends so don't want to travel too far for weekends. Loch Lomond is lovely but is serious midgie territory.
I agree there is a shortage of sites within an hour of us, that's why I'm hoping for a personal recommendation so we can decide where to try it out (first time camping for a couple of the families)

if you are camping by tent you could try keltie bridge in callenadr, or if by caravan either keltie bridge or gart caravan part, I hae stayed at gart a few times over the past couple of years and this campsite is great with kids, great playground. also callendar is only 20 min walk from campsite or you can catch a bus, this is only an hour from glasgow.

If you create a Drive Time Zone from Glasgow City Centre for 1 hour, then you take in Tyndrum and Perth to the north, Ayr to the west, the far side of Edinburgh to the east and Moffat to the south.
Within that area there must be many camping sites with the requiremants that you desire.
Auchterarder near Perth springs to mind or for a quieter site but still with lots of play area is Lettershaws near Leadhills.
However a simple search on here (UKCS) should bring you up a reasonable selection.
Cheers for replies, I'll have a look at those sites. I could maybe tempt them as Perth or Moffat but they are both over the hour away. We have one Dad who refuses to camp but will "day visit" The master plan (insert evil laugh here) is to show him what he's missing out on at a good site and change his mind. The search function on here is excellent but the vast majority of the reviews of local sites are from touring caravans or motorhomes so just checking out what would be good for tents
Strathclyde Country Park we had a walk on this site last week as we where visiting our daughter there where more tents than caravans on the site it down the road from the mb s fun fair and there a nice walk round the loch
and theres a toby carvery across road from site its not a bad site
Try Witches Craig at Stirling. Lovely site, within easy reach of Glasgow. There's a kiddies play area but you'd need to phone and ask about ball games.
edit - Cobleland also a nice site, and I can do that in an hour from Glasgow Southside.

There's a good CCC site on Loch Lomond, at Balmaha, near Drymen. Millarochy Bay, I think it's called (it's in my site reviews if you look at my member data below my name). I've stayed there twice. Just beyond that, about a mile further along that road (actually at the end of the road) is another campsite that looks very good. I've never stayed there, but I've been there with my kids and we've gotten out of the car to enjoy the loch, and it looks good (and has good reviews). CCC also have a site on the west side of Loch Lomond, on the A83 side. Easier to get to, but you'll have a lot of noise from the very busy road.
The caravan site at the bottom of the loch, in Balloch (mentioned upthread) does not accept tents. There is another campsite between Balloch and Drymen that has pretty blah reviews... just a very basic site and if I remember correctly, the reviews were critical of the state of the toilets. You can access the loch from it, but you are not right on it.
Christine, we are also South Glasgow so those sites would be in easy reach for us, cheers (wouldn't it be bizarre if we are form the same area lol) Do you know if Witches Craig or Cobleland do EHU for tents?
I adore the shores of Loch Lomond but midgies are my enemy number one I'm afraid Tried holidaying in Fort William once when my son was 7 weeks old. I needed steroid treatment my allergic reaction was so bad

Yes they both do EHU. Check out the Camp Site Search facility at the top of the page it should list what's available at each site.
Midges, grrr.. too many stories. Suffice to say I didn't recommend Ardgarten, I spent one night with a mozzie bag over my head, sheer murder. Only time I ever came home after one night away. I also get the allergic reaction and husband is completely left alone, says I'm the best repellant. Anyway enjoy wherever you chose. Another place I like is Hoddom Castle, but it takes longer than an hour.. no much but it is further.

I'm afraid you might find Cobeland midge city as well, based on personal experience. Most sites like Cobeland that sit amongst trees alongside a river will be a prime target for the wee blighters in the right conditions.
