Hello all

I'm looking for recommendations for nice child friendly sites in the Swanage area please - I have 2 boys (8 and nearly 4) the oldest would like to go fossil hunting which is why I'm thinking of the Jurassic coast
I'd like to find somewhere that has a play area and maybe a bar for the evening or a pub within walking distance
Any recommendations?

We have just come back from Norden farm just outside Corfe Castle. One of our favourite sites and not expensive. Play area and all sorts of animals on the site including a pet area. Centre of Corfe castle is only a mile away. There is a path through the woods or the steam train very close.

For fossils you need to get over to Lulworth cove.

Also good for fossils is Charmouth. Several sites around there and someone will doubtless tell you which has a bar etc.

No doubt someone will also be along with the health & safety warnings on fossil hunting.

Charmouth is good for fossils,  Seadown on Charmouth is nice.  You can walk to the beach and town from the site for all the amenities.

I second Seadown and Charmouth in general.
Swanage is not reknowned for it"s fossil hunting. That said it is still a nice area.

You might find this link useful for fossils

http://www.jurassiccoastline.com/jurassic_fossil.asp

Although Charmouth is best for fossil hunting the village is VERY quiet. It is an easy walk from Seadown into the one main street for decent pubs the place does go into a coma in the evenings. A decent sandy beach for daytime (weather permitting).

Nearest towns will be Bridport or Lyme Regis. Both nice places but quiet.

Swanage is a bit livelier but as I said above you will have a short drive out to Lulworth/durdle door for fossil hunting.

Liveliest place on the jurassic coast is pobably Weymouth & then a 45 minute drive to Charmouth.

Depends what you are looking for.

Hi all

Thanks for all your help - we've just returned from a lovely few days at Norden Farm which was a really nice site. I did try Seadown but it was fully booked - one for next year I think . We will definitely be back at Norden Farm too as the kids had a fantastic time.
