If you are near Loch Ken area, go to the place where you can watch the Red Kites being fed. They give you a wee talk aswell, and after you have been, you will be amazed at how good you are at spotting them everywhere you go! They are amazing birds!
Not sure of where precisely you're going and whether you have children, but we went to Kirkcudbright last year at this time and there were a whole host of summer events taking place. These included Scottish night on a Thursday, a 16th Centruty re-enacted walk on Friday evening, Arts & Crafts Fair over the weekend. Certainly all worth a visit if you are nearby.
We also visted Threave Castle, Galloway Forest Park and for the children Cream O Galloway ice cream farm/adventure play park and The Cocoa Bean chocolate factory. All in all we found it a great area with plenty to do.
Thanks,
We are off to Dallbeattie, 2 Adults, DS 13yrs & Roxy the dog :) We like exploring, both the Kites & the Ice cream sound good & I love any thing historical .

Castles! When we were up there we got a pass that got us in to loads of castles, so much so that the kids have never wanted to go to another castle! Shame for them as I love castles!! Caerlaverock was my favourite.
Drundrennan Abbey is also worth a visit, although this area could be busy as Wickerman Festival is this weekend, (which if your up for it, is a great family festival)
There is also a Wildlife Park in Kircudbright and this is a lovely wee town.
and Sandyhills bay has a great beach for a sunny day.
This is one of my favourite areas to visit.
Hope you have a lovely time.

We are off to new england Bay on sunday 24th, really looking forward to it,never been to the area so hoping there is plenty of good walking for us and our crazy springer spaniel !
When at Brighouse Bay my daughter loves Cream of Galloway.....for the ice-cream and the adventure playground....I love the really tasty burgers!
If along at New England Bay i enjoy a trip up to the Mull of Galloway lighthouse and a visit to Portpatrick.
Chocolate world and the David Coulthard musuem at Twyneholm(?)about 10 mins from kirkcudbight. Galloway forest if you like walking. Oh and the Red kites mentioned earlier are amazing!!
We stayed at Loch Ken three weeks ago so would agree with previous folks suggesting the red kites. We saw lots flying over our tent. Cream o Galloway is also a must. The ice cream is just the best. Only problem is deciding which flavour to have!!!
