Leaving it till the 11th hour as usual, but looking for a campsite for us over bank hols weekend.
A lot of sites state on their website no advance bookings taken, so does this still apply on a bank holiday too? Getting a bit panicky having visions of trailing us around site to site with no room at any inns!!!!
can anyone recommend anywhere where we may stand a chance around lakes or couple of hours from Newcastle?
Up until now have booked in advance and not done the 'first come first served' thing!
Any advice appreciated!!
Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!
I would still ring the sites that you are looking at to make sure that they have spaces - how bad would you feel trapsing around looking for somewhere and you end up back home again because you did not manage to get in.
I make a point of booking for BH's these days as these tend to be one of the busiest times of the year. You may find sites only take bookings for these periods and then at other times it is a free for all.
With money being tight for lots - camping seems to be the cheap option for the once holidaymakers that settled for trips abroad. I find it is getting increasingly harder to get into some sites that usually are turn up and a pitch is guarenteed (sp).
Hope you get something sorted.

We're off to Rosedale Abbey with a couple of other families, they were filling up quite rapidly when I booked a couple of weeks ago but they may still have spaces (3 night minimum though).
August 2013, 14, 15, 16 & 17-Trevornick for two and a half weeks of sea and surf (and ever optimistic -lots of sun). Some other weekends if I can persuade DH
Thanks again everyone, looking into them all as I type (a bit of multi tasking!)
jewelsm, thanks for that will have a look. I see you are a fellow north easterner too and have the voyager 6 as well! Hope this damn weather cheers itself up for the hols but going on past experience probably not!

Castlerigg Hall just outside Keswick is a lovely site and doesn't take tent bookings.
I dont think there'll be much chance of getting a pitch at the Bank Hol weekend if you are going to be later than Friday lunchtime getting there.
One of my colleagues arrived at 16.00hrs 2 weeks ago on the Friday, she had lots of telephone conversations with the site on that day and the previous day as she needed mobile phone signal - she was assured there would be a pitch available for her tent.
There wasn't and she ended up staying with me overnight as there was no-where available. It was a bog standard weekend!

Hi there Coll26 - they have threatened us with sun this weekend (ssshhhhhh tho - if we talk about it too much it might panic and disappear)! Yes, good old Go Outdoors - its our first tent (have spent the last few years dropping hints to hubby about camping) and now the little one is starting school in September its the most cost effective way of having more than one holiday a year (being tied to school holidays and all that). Hope you manaaged to get bbooked somewhere.

Yes we have got booked at spiers house for the sat and sun nights over the bank hols. Just a standard pitch but hey thats all we want, just pleased we got sorted!
Exactly like us, first tent too and we have a nearly 4 year old boy!! Will yours sleep in a sleeping bag? I got a lovely gelert one for him but no- he has his duvet and then bag unfolded on top, so stubborn!
Camping is great though, we love it and so does little one, always seems to make a friend even if its for a day!
Lovely to chat to someone local who is v similar to us!!!!
Likewise to chat with someone locally. Joe is committed to his duvet. He sleeps with the sleeping bag on top of his airbed with a sheet on top and then him followed by duvet. He likes to be able to move around and found the sleeping bag too restricting.
Its good that you found somewhere for the weekend (we are only for Sat/Sun night too but beggars can't be choosers huh.
Hope you have a good time, let us know what the site is like and I will do likewise with Bellingham - always good to have some info on fairly local sites.

Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
