Hi all, I'm looking for somewhere to camp that isnt a "campsite" so to speak.
I came across a website called 'Get On My Land'. The concept was great, landowners inviting people to camp on their land, its not a camp site, just land so kind of like wild camping. The only down side to this particular website was that you have to hire their bell tents, which as we all know is not cheap.
So does anybody know a friendly farmer or a place where you can just roll up and camp without the obligatory screaming children or the glow of fluorescent lights from the washing area, somewhere back to basics where its just you, a field, the stars and a tent?
Any help would be most apprecitated.
Jim

I don't have any suggestions (unless it's wild camping in Scotland, of course), but just wanted to say that I'm beginning to think along the same lines as you. Having stayed at one or two out-of-the-way places recently I've realised that I far prefer that to the usual campsite set-up.
Your idea sounds great, just getting away from it all into the countryside. Obviously it's not for everyone as it would involve doing without many of the things that a lot of people want from a camping holiday, but it really appeals to me. I hope you find your ideal pitch!
there is a farm in Wales which might be just what you are looking for,
its near Harlech north Wales, at Crafnant Farm , farmer is John Jones or Trevor, look on a map for Llanbedr turn off main road at the Victoria Inn, nearly opposit Shell Island turnhead inland about 4mls towards the Roman steps, site is down a track on the right, few tents get here mainly Scouts, only one tap, no toilets or showers, open fires I think are ok walks straight from the site, poss sheep on site & right by the river ok as long as it does not rain for to long as you may get flooded out as we did about 12yrs ago, we went first in 1976 untill 1992, but in a caravan but to big now to get in the field over hump back bridge, I have not got a contact number, but did not need to book,

Hi, just what are the rules about wild camping up there? I would love to do it but with a 11hr drive it would take some planning! I'm hoping to give it ago next year so I can escape the horror that will be London during the Olympics! If you can recommend some places that would be great.
I love camping rough, it's how it should be done. Must have caught the bug when I was in the army cadets sleeping under a sheet in a forest lol. Can't beat it. Haven't done that kind of thing for 10years or so now.

Hi! Sorry, I've only just had another look at this post and noticed your question.
Here's a link to the Scottish Outdoor Access Code (look here too) which should give you some information about wild camping. I haven't tried it myself yet so don't have places to recommend but my brother has wild camped by the shores of Loch Rannoch and in Glen Orchy.
I was camping in the Outer Hebrides last month in a couple of locations which, although they were designated camping places, were so quiet, informal and basic that they could hardly be described as campsites in the usual sense, but still provided water and toilet facilities at least. They would probably be too far for you to travel to, but they are beautiful. People wild camp on the islands as well.
