We are looking for next year to go camping with friends and would like to be near Dartmoor, but able to go to south coast on odd days out. We have been to Sweet Meadows which was lovely but you have drive miles just to get somewhere eg moors.

We like: smallish quiet sites with a shower, not too busy and preferably fires allowed. Other than that open to suggestion.

Any good suggestions? Either on moors or nearish?

Campsites on the south side of Dartmoor tend to be just outside Dartmoor national Park.  For example - Lemonford Caravan site, Holmans Wood caravan site and parkers Farm Caravan site are all on the right side for you if you want easy access to the south coast but they are not what I would call Dartmoor sites.  They all have some road noise as they are close to the A38, but if you want easy access to the South's beaches and can overlook this then one of those 3 might suit.

If you want quieter/more "moorland" sites you might be better coming inland - although this will impact on your time getting to the coast.

Runnage Camping Barns at Postbridge is right in the Moor.  Quite remote in location but a typical moorland site on working farm.  Fires allowed and site borders stream.  Very pretty basic camp site, but would involve a cross moor drive to get to the beach (nice and scenic though!!)

We stay quite regularly at Harford Bridge near Tavistock.  This is just within the National Park about 2 miles from Tavistock so again if you wanted to get to the south coast you would have to go across moor.  The site has spotless facilities and you can pitch next to a lovely river if you don't have EHU.

Yeah, check the reviews.  Or look at Google maps and see which is the best.

We stayed at Tavistock C & CC site (it was called Higher Longford, at Moorshop) at end of May this year and couldn't fault it.
Managers were very helpful - dog walks good - only two minutes drive onto glorious Dartmoor - about four from Tavistock itself.
In Ladies shower block were 2 separate toilets; plus a washbasin with soap and dryer; plus 6 very large cubicles each with shower, toilet, washbasin.
A plus for us was that nearby was a kennels where we were able to leave our dog for the day whilst we went to Lost Gardens of Heligan (as they advise not taking dogs there).
Park & ride into Plymouth was very handy (and the dog could go on too).
