Just got back for the second year running for Carlyon Bay in St Austell. Loved it again but ready for a change.
Anybody recommend a good family site as close to a beach as possible in either Cornwall/Devon/Dorset??? We like a site that's not too large perhaps with a small bar/ kids play area/ swimming pool but not looking for anything like a Haven!!!
We looked at Pentewen Sands in Mevagissey but worried its just too large/cramped for us. Any ideas???

Trevornick is nice, and only a short walk over sand dunes to the beach but sounds like it may be a bit big for you, plus I think it's got very expensive.
We like Ruda too, we even like the early evening entertainment for the kids these days (oh how we have changed !) - it's not as bad as haven in our experience .

We liked Harlyn Sands near Padstow, fantastic sandy beach 2 minute walk, good entertainment, nice pool. Only down side would be the showers which cost 20p.
Trevella Park is nice, and we've used Budemeadows several times too.

Xmas-still looking...
Although we haven't been there for three years (been to France for a bit of sun now the kids are older) Beachside in Hayle should tick all the boxes for you. Bar,pool, play areas and direct access to one of the best beaches on north Cornwall coast.Excellent well maintained site definitely worth trying,we did for 7 years in a row advisable to book early we used to have a deposit paid before Christmas and settle the rest 6 weeks before we went whether this is still the criteria they use not sure.

We love Ruda for its location, and just tend to ignore the clubhouse as it's not really our thing!
I'll second Ruda - purely for location. Really fabulous beach within 3 minutes walk - it's hubby's surfing beach (he was there yesterday!). Surf school on the beach, lifeguarded, and also close walk to Croyde village and a few little shops.
Ideal location for exploring everything nearby (Saunton, Braunton, Woolacombe, Ilfracombe).
Another vote for Ruda ... can't beat the location .. I posted a review from our week there this August which has a lot more detail
Agree it's a big site, but we too did not 'partake' of the club house/disco/bar/kids entertainment etc ...so you can just stick to the camping side of things and do not need to go near the main centre (apart from the shop which does AMAZING fresh croissants etc in the morning!)
That said, we may have been grateful for the big site amenities had the week been a total wash-out - that's why we went there ... so we had a back-up plan if the weather was totally pants!
But on the whole it was beach beach beach all the way, with surf lessons for our girls ... plan to go again next year and hope to find time to do some of the lovely coastal walks!
We loved the fact we could park the car and not get in it again until it was time to go home!

Tregarton Park? No bar but excellent heated outdoor pool and play area, great for younger kids. We've just returned from here and seriously thinking of booking again next year when our annual leave is approved. Caerheys beach is about a mile and a half away.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
