Hello everyone,

My wife and I are reasonably new to camping and have generally been away with others, with one exception. This year we will be going away on our own. We are late family starters and have one 9 year old to entertain. We found the Freshwater site at Burton Bradstock ok and indeed the evening entertainment whilst harking back to a bygone age for us was well recieved by our son. Sooooo, where would other campers recommend for evening entertainment and general fun activities during the day, with an only child, not forgetting decent beaches?

Haven, Parkdean or Park Resorts should fit your bill. If you can go midweek, they are also a lot cheaper

I know what you mean OH and I on our own wouldn't bother with entertainment, but our kids mainly our 8 year old daughter laps it up every time.  We like Hendra, it has the pool, great location for beaches and places of interest.  Its quite a pricey site but the kids entertainment is very good they get the kids on stage taking part in games and dances.  We stay in the Paddock area which was really quiet so when we didn't want to participate we were left in peace and quiet.

We enjoyed Stowford Farm Meadows

http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/reviews.asp?revid=1311

when our daughter was about the same age. There was entertainment for the children in the mornings and various outdoor activities plus a swmiing pool (which we didn't try) .

What about Ruda in Croyde ? Its right by the beach and has entertainment and a good pool with rapids and a slide. Its ideal if you are in a campervan because the beach is right there , you don't need to move again ! Also, the entertainment, whilst cheesy, isn't too hideous. We have stayed at Haven sites and found them hard work, plus they sting you for extra money for things all the time during the evening (pay £5 for a photo of your child and the person dressed as a character etc etc) . Parkdean isn't so bad for that .
The local shops and pubs are nice too.
Its pricey in peak season though but not too bad in low season.

Also we went to East/West Fleet near Weymouth (can't remember which one)
that had evening entertainment and the kids made there own evening entertainment with cricket matches etc They also had one of the large blow slides (chargeable) which went down well. Its tents and motor homes only though, but had an outdoor pool.

Trevornick near Newquay.
Carlyon Bay near St. Austell.
Whitehill Country Park near Paignton.
Searles holiday park in Hunstanton.
All of these sites have entertainment, some more "full on" than others.

Good shout for Ruda, and a fantastic beach and short drive away from some other spectacular beaches in North Devon.

A lot of people rate Perran Sands at Perranporth - the touring facilities look top notch (seen them from the sand dunes whilst walking) and it's close to the beach.
