We are planning to take our touring caravan from our home in Kent, to Woolacombe in Devon.
We are planning to take the more scenic A303 rather than the M4/M5.
Can anyone recommend a campsite that is quite close to the A303 on the Wiltshire/Somerset borders, with easy access road(s) which we all tend to look out for.
Also, as we are only planning a short stop of one or maybe two days, it would be handy if anyone knows of a campsite which is close (not necessarily walking distance) to a pub which sells food.

There is a CL called Wyndham Farm near the A303 but it's near Gillingham which is just in Dorset, don't know if that's too far? Also only has CWD and EHU, no loos /showers, if that matters. £10 per night.
We found a great site last year on our way down to Cornwall, Long Hazel at Sparkford Yeovil. It is just off the A303 only about 1 mile. you turn off at the rounderbout and straight into the village. walking distance is a very pub. large pitches and very clean toilets are very good etc. owners are very nice,we shall always use it as a break down south from Norfolk.
Where are you planning on "cutting up through" to get to Woolacombe? You going to come up to junction 25 (Taunton) of the M5 and then down to junction 27 (Tiverton) and up the North Devon link road?
Not sure if it's suitable but look at Long Hazel Park campsite - it's literally right next door to the A303 at Sparkford. Adult only though. But it's really easy access and there is a pub about a 2 minute walk from the site in the village. Ideal for a stop over but be aware of road noise due to it's proximity.

If you are coming down the A303 and turning right onto the A358 to junction 25 M5, try this one.
The CC Site Five Acres, now called Ilminster Chard, is a few miles farther on down the A303 and is two hundred yards off the A303.
I believe the site has a brand new toilet block and plenty of hard standings, very quiet outwith of bank holidays etc.
Good food pub just down the road, the landlord will pick you up from the site and return you free of charge.
Stonehenge Touring Park near Orcheston is a nice site, so it Salisbury C&CC club site.

The Sparkford site would be the best for access and convenience. I looked at both of these a few days ago and the exit to and from the Ilminster site with a caravan is not good. Sparkford was bypassed when they duelled the A303 and is a pretty little village now. Pub lovely and the Haynes (Motor Manuals) Motor Museum is there too.

The Sparkford site would be the best for access and convenience. I looked at both of these a few days ago and the exit to and from the Ilminster site with a caravan is not good. Sparkford was bypassed when they duelled the A303 and is a pretty little village now. Pub lovely and the Haynes (Motor Manuals) Motor Museum is there too.

As regards the CC site Ilminster it is quite easy if you drive a mile down the 303 and turn at the next junction underpass and return up hill and turnright into the site that way. Same when leaving, turn left onto 303 and repeat the above. This saves the tight turn into the lane leading to site.
