Does anyone know of a "proper" forest campsite. The closest we have ever got is Spiers House in North Yorkshire but would actually like to be camping under the trees.
Any suggestions?

I have seen smallish tents pitched by little running water surrounded by trees at Beddgelert Forest Hols. Also seen tents pitched by the stream/river, you have to carry the equipment down to it, in a clearance, surrounded by bush, trees. It gives you that little bit of isolation feeling.
It's on the right as if your going to drive ahead over the tracks. You have to get out of the car and look down, to see.

Many of the "Forest Holidays" sites (aka "camping in the forest") are under trees - there's a website for these Forestry sites. Cashel at east Loch Lomond, for example, beside the West Highland Way, is oak woodland. And Glenmore near Aviemore (part of the site, at the edge of the loch) is dark and cool under the Scots Pines. You get cheaper fees if you're a C&CC member at these. The C&CC sites at Ravenglass and Haltwhistle are pretty well wooded, if I recall - Scone used to be, but sadly they cut down all the trees for some reason. If you have wheels you'll be in birch wood at Dalraddy near Aviemore (tents go into an open field). Glenesk near Edzell is dense mixed woodland round a wee loch complete with ducks.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
