Hi,

I've read the reviews and looked at the websites and I'm trying to decide between Cashel or Milarrochy Bay campsites.

We prefer to have electrical hook-up if possible and perhaps take a boat trip to one of the islands.

My partner is paranoid about pitches being well draining and level.

Kids happy to potter about and do a bit walking or maybe cycling.

Any opinions welcome. :)

Thanks

Hi ive been to milarrochy Bay, pitches were level and didnt seem to have a problem with drainage. You can get boat trips from Dryden which is a lovely walk away at the side of the loch. Great area for walking and cycling and it is on the edge of the loch . Didnt stay at Cashel but it is quite a bit further up the lane, away from Dryden . The only thing to watch out for are the midges if its damp they are terrible! I would love to go again though

Just to say Dryden is actually called Drymen.

Given where it is, the distance between them isn't a deal breaker. Cashel (C) is run by Forestry Commission, Milarochy (M) by C&CC. Check the reviews as the managers of both sites seem to have a different attitude or "culture" towards campers, one site used to be less welcoming. M has boat launching, C is closer to Rowardennan (pub). M is much more open, a grass field with trees round the outside, bit more sloping (tents may not get the level pitches that caravans do). C is largely in the oak woodland, so it's a bit cooler / more sheltered / leafy. BOTH have midges in season, believe me! Both give access to the loch with small beaches. Can't remember toilet blocks enough to compare - reviews would say. Both are near enough to the West Highland Way for some safe walking. Boat trips from Balmaha to at least one of the islands. And bigger boats (steamer, if restored) go from Balloch too. Walk up Conic Hill for the fabulous views, it's not too big for youngsters, doesn't need special gear. But don't take on Ben Lomond lightly. For either site, the short steep bendy hill south of Balmaha is "interesting" first time, but at least you're not towing a caravan. In short, either site! they're different. Why not split the holiday in two?!
