Last year we were away the occasion that Northey Island, Maldon was open so when I received my National Trust 'near you' leaflet I was pleased to see it is open earlier this year and not during our main holiday.
On further investigation it's £20 a person with no reductions for NT members so £100 for us for the weekend with no electric. I appreciate this is a one off event but don't understand why children are charged the same rate as adults .
So whilst I consider going to this I was wondering if there are any other Island camp sites as I can only search near a beach, I am aware of Shell Island and this is an area we are interested in for next year but they have no electric which we would like as would be there a couple of weeks.
So basically we are looking for an Island campsite that has EHU and going to cost £30 a night or less for a family of 5 with tent and possibly drive away awning. Will consider sites on East coast without electric as could go for a weekend.

Hi Tynxuk, as I presume the Scottish Islands are too far, the only small one I can think of is Piel Island but presume no EHU.
Does it have to be an island you can get to by a causeway?
Or do you mean islands that involve a boat or plane?
If you're looking at Shell Island, there's Lundy?

thanks for taking the time to look, yes I mean Tidal islands rather than ones you need other transportation and Scotland is a bit far for us at the moment (too many toilet stops with young children).
I've found the closest to us is Mersea Island although it's so large I'm not sure the children will appreciate it.
I'm always amazed at how many islands there are around the UK...loads I've never heard of when I start to look. Unfortunately a lot of the small NT type don't allow camping/overnight visitors.
Have you considered inland waterways/islands for short breaks? Might give you the feel you're after.
I'm always browsing 'Islands' and looking at Ireland's west coast at the moment...so little money and so little time, that's the problem.

What about Hayling Island? I know it's a bit commercialised but think it also has quieter parts and if you have beach weather I should think the children would love it. There are plenty of interesting places around as well.
BUMP! Tynx, did you get anywhere with this? I was looking greedily at details of Troytown on St Agnes and wondering whether there's anywhere with that vibe but with EHU. For me, a lot of the appeal is the sense of remoteness, so maybe any old peninsula with a lighthouse would do.

Not an island but the Roseland Peninsula across the bay from Falmouth is lovely. And once you're down into the peninsula it gets pretty quiet.
Plenty of beaches, the coastal path goes around the headland past a lighthouse. You can catch a little ferry boat to St Mawes and then a bigger ferry to Falmouth.
Stayed at Trewince Farm which has lovely views, EHU (I didn't use but I know they had them) and reasonable facilities (nothing fancy but does the job).
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
