You mentioned Sussex, but that might be stretching your 5 hour travel time a bit, given the horrors of the M25 and the bottom bit of the M40.

I can wholly recommend the C&CC site at Graffham in West Sussex though. It's a woodland site and some of the pitches are really secluded, you can get a whole little clearing all to yourself and your dog won't even know there are other dogs around. Showers etc spotlessly clean, very quiet at night, lots of wildlife, great walks that start at the door of your tent - totally peaceful.

There's also a lot to do and see in the area, nice towns and villages to visit (I recommend a trip to the butchers in Petworth, for possibly the best sausages in the world!), coast isn't far, great countryside.

It has only 2 drawbacks: barbecues and fires aren't allowed because of the fire risk in the woods, and the nearest pub is about a 30 minute walk away (although it's a nice walk, mostly on footpaths through fields and woods).

Don't forget to leave a review of the campsites you have visited this year or last!

I spotted that one today and wondered about it. Someone on the reviews queried whether it would be as good peak season and that's what made me stop and question. I know I'm being pedantic but mum sold her caravan after my dad died and we bought her a tent so she could come with us. This will be our first trip so I want it to be right.
