We are travelling south on M6 shortly from Scotland, mid week, and are looking for a 1 night stop over just off motorway around Penrith area. Clean, small site would be preferable. Any recommendations.

Moss Thorn CL, probably the nearest to the M6, has a loo but no shower, cheap, fine for an overnighter.

Hi,

We're heading down South on Thursday and are stopping over at Troutbeck Head. We're leaving at about 4.00pm from Dundee and last time managed to just arrive before reception closed at 8.00pm. They do have a late night arrivals area though, incase of delays. Although it's not a small site, it is spotlessly clean.

Cheers,
Alex.

Thank you both. Do you have any idea how far a drive the sites are from junction 40 and do both have easy slip roads from north? Thanks

Hi 4suths,
It's less than 10 miles from J40, about 15 minutes on a good road. The junction is fine, just a standard junction.
Cheers,
Alex.

Moss Thorn is 2 miles max, takes minutes from J40. You do have to come back on yourself on the main road going there, as it's a dual carriageway, not a problem.

We've used Faugh Head CS, has a portacabin with everything you need and it's really peaceful. Come off the M6 at the A6 junction south of Carlisle, down the A6 and it's not far off that - next morning, back to the A6 and south on this now-quiet road to Penrith where you'd top up with cheap fuel at Morrisons and get back onto the M6. The UKCS map search is ideal, though - a stop-over isn't the whole holiday, after all.

A little bit further down at junction 36, but we stayed at Waters Edge and would recommend it for a stop over. We were even a bit later than anticipated arriving due to traffic, and it was no bother. Quick telephone call, and the owner then kept an eye out for us and opened the barrier when we arrived.
