We are considering returning to the Keswick Camping and Caravan Club site next Summer. Previously we stayed in our trailer tent on a grass pitch with electric. Next year we will be in our Monty 6 with awning but will want electric. On checking prices, as members it will be £528 for 14 nights on a grass pitch or £328 on a hard standing. We usually have an AWP and we have a footprint -- but I am really not sure about hard standing? We would only be 2 adults plus dogs - no kids! We have a carpet and the ground sheet for the awning part - and only really use the awning part for cooking and storage of food - we have labradors!!!
Would you choose to camp o a hardstanding for 2 weeks ? We use raised amp bed with SIMS on so would not be sleeping on the floor!!

We've done it twice, when hard standing was the only thing available, due to the winter closure of the (grass) tent field.
In all honesty, at the time, it went well, and we quite liked it... but after returning, it was apparent that the stones had done more harm than good to the separate footprint groundsheet. Luckily, the SIG of the actual tent survived intact.
With hindsight, coupled with a few stories since read on here, and words of wisdom from certain folk on here, I seriously doubt I'd ever pitch a tent on hard standing again. Doesn't seem worth the risk, imo.
I guess you could argue that certain surfaces are better than others, but it's a no from me, from now on.
I once had to pitch on the grass at the side of a hard standing which was ok, and the car went on the gravel bit.
I must say I have had some rough pitches over recent years and therefore decided to buy a footprint this year. I am glad I did because it has protected the bottom of my tent well.
I am not sure I would want to pitch directly on a hard standing though unless it was made of nicely rounded stones. Chippings, grit or plain concrete (how could you use the pegs?) would be a no no.

We had to pitch on a hardstanding once for similar reasons to Mucker1884. As we knew in advance, I went to Wickes and bought a 4m x 5m thick black polythene pond liner for just £12. This provided a suitable layer between the SIG and the gravel. It was quite bulky though and very heavy. We had to sacrifice a few things to make room for it. Did the job very well and the SIG was spotless but I would not want to make a habit of pitching on gravel.
Cheers,
Bert
