I am wanting to camp in and around edinburgh, It seems all the campsites I have looked at are - to me - quite expensive. Maybe thats just par for the course as its Edinburgh but I just wondered if anyone had any tips for cheaper camping, either paid or wild camping.
Many thanks for any help at all.

OP..have you had a look at the Linwater site, just outside Edinburgh but park and ride close by..
Really depends what you want regarding facilities like hookup etc, they all add to the cost on any site.
If you cross the Forth and head to Fife there is "Gimme Shelter" which is like wild camping but with compost loos and not expensive.
There are lots of good reviews on the Site Search..

Campsites near major cities like Edinburgh and London will always be more expensive. However you do have to balance the convenience of being near the Centre with the added cost of transport/fuel if you go to a cheaper site further out.

We've booked Linwater Caravan Park... Tent pitch for 3 nights arriving Friday, 14th August at a cost of £23 per night including a car, tent, 2 people and electric hookup.
5 miles to the Tram park & Ride.
Major City, Peak Summer time, and smack in the middle of the Festival dates, so I don't think that's too bad at all. Didn't even have to pay deposit. Just told to pay on arrival, but have the decency to contact them if we wish to cancel... which we won't (cancel, that is!!)... also got tickets for the Tattoo on the Saturday (late) night! By the time we get back to the tent, after midnight, it will be our 19th wedding anniversary (never mind the 10 and a half years living in sin before that)!
thank you for your replies, you are quite right - you do have to pay extra for the privilege of being near a major city.
To be honest, I have found the back-packer hostels to be very good and actually cheaper than camping. Its just that I love to camp, either in my campervan and backpacking.
Still much cheaper than Cornwall & Devon. Mortonhall is ok, so is Drum Mhor at Musselburgh. (There are others, it's just that I've been to these.) You can get a bus into the city from both of these - get a day ticket, it's about £3. As for wild camping - no chance! All the carparks in the Lothians have gantries at the entrance. Sadly we have problems with travelling people who pitch up where they can and leave rubbish and worse behind.
Amazing family weekend with old steam engines, classic car displays, market stalls, and full catering and bar. And camping on site - Save £25 by booking in advance.
